ROME, Ga. – The Auburn University at Montgomery women's basketball team fell in the final road game of the season to Gulf South Conference foe Shorter on Tuesday night 72-63.
The Warhawks road record this season ends at 2-5 while Shorter's record on the year rises to 5-13.
Catlin Carter once again led the Warhawks in scoring, netting 19 points in the losing effort while grabbing seven boards. Freshman guard
Jamya Tyus also impressed on the road against the Hawks, scoring 15 points.
"We came up short tonight, but after a long four-game road swing over the last seven days, that was bound to happen," said head coach
Sean Page. "We were 2-2 on the four-game road trip, and I'm pretty happy with what we did as a group in the last week. Now we have to regroup and get ready for a very tough opponent this weekend at home."
AUM and Shorter started the game with a back-and-forth battle offensively, though the start of the game was low scoring. A layup from Shorter's Ansley Barge a the five-minute mark of the first quarter ran the game to a 6-5 advantage for the Hawks.
The offense picked up to end the first period of action. The Warhawks were able to come back from a 13-7 deficit to take a 14-13 lead thanks to a 3-pointer from
Jessika Milton and layups from Carter and Tyus, but the Orange & Black would be down by two to end the first.
AUM would start the second quarter off on a 7-2 run thanks to points from Carter,
Alexia Wallace, Tyus and
Gracie Lee, giving the Warhawks a 21-18 lead.
Shorter eventually tied the game, and a 3-pointer from
Jordan Brewster gave AUM a four-point lead with three minutes left in the first half.
Shorter and AUM would trade baskets to conclude the first half of action, and the two teams would remain tied at the half at 34 points each.
The third quarter was dominated by Shorter. The Hawks raced out to a 13-2 run to take a 47-36 lead over the Warhawks in the middle stages of the third. The big run was preceded by another from the Hawks, as they would close out the third quarter with a commanding 62-45 lead over AUM.
The Warhawks were able to bring the game back within striking distance with a good start to the fourth quarter. A Carter layup before the media timeout in the fourth brought the Shorter lead to 11 before a late jumper from the Hawks gave them a 70-53 lead. Time was not on AUM's side as Tyus' layup at the buzzer
gave the Hawks an eventual 72-63 win.
AUM will close out the season with a two-game home series against Gulf South Conference foe Lee. Game one from the AUM Gymnasium is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
