MONTGOMERY, Ala. ------ Despite home runs by
Matthew Marfice in each game, the Auburn Montgomery baseball team dropped a pair of one-run decisions in its Gulf South Conference doubleheader against Lee Saturday, falling 2-1 in the opener and 6-5 in the night cap at Q.V. Lowe Field.
Â
The Warhawks and Flames will conclude their series with a single contest Sunday afternoon, beginning at 1 p.m.
Â
GAME 1
Â
Hunter Viets tossed eight innings and allowed only a pair of two-out, unearned runs in a tough-luck defeat.
Â
Viets (1-3) scattered seven hits, while striking out eight in the loss. Lee's Seth Konkel (3-0) matched Viets nearly pitch-for-pitch, tossing eight innings of one-run ball, striking out eight and walking two.
Â
Marfice led the Warhawks (5-6, 5-6 GSC) at the plate with a pair of hits, including his first home run of the season.
Casey Henderson also added two hits in the loss, while
Jackson Ceman and
Ethan Wells contributed doubles.
Â
Lee (11-1, 10-0 GSC) struck for its first unearned run in the top of the first inning, when Thomas Zazzero came in to score on a fielding error by Henderson. Zazzero led off the game with a single, before moving to second on a single by Alan Smith.
Â
The Warhawks, who left at least one runner on base in each of the first four innings, tied the score with two down in the bottom of the sixth on a blast by Marfice over the left-centerfield fence.
Â
However, the Flames took the lead for good in the top of the eighth inning, when Colton Yeager reached for the second time on an error, allowing Dylan Standifer to score the eventual game-winning run.
Â
Smith and Standifer each had a pair of hits for the Flames. Andy Rivera tossed a scoreless ninth for his second save of the season.
Â
GAME 2
Four Lee pitchers combined to scatter just five hits to propel the Flames to the doubleheader sweep.
Â
Quinterrious Arrington led the Warhawks with two hits, a run scored and a run batted in. Marfice contributed a two-run shot, while
Zach Feaster also picked up an RBI.
Â
Lee got on the board first in the top of the fourth inning, scoring a pair of runs off AUM starter
Micah Henderson. Ryan Beamish launched a one-out solo homer to right center, before a two-out single by Landon Silver plated Standifer with the second run of the frame.
Â
In the bottom of the fourth, Arrington led off with a single to right field, before coming around to score on Marfice's second home run of the afternoon. The Warhawks went on to load the bases with two outs on three consecutive hit batters, but were unable to push across the go-ahead run.
Â
The Flames retook the lead with a pair of RBI singles by Beamish and Standifer in the top of the fifth inning, only to watch the Warhawks rally to tie the score on an RBI fielder's choice by Feaster and a wild pitch by Chandler Ring (1-0). Ring finished the afternoon tossing 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief, striking out four to earn the victory.
Â
Lee took the lead for good by adding unearned runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to extend its lead to 6-4.
Â
The Warhawks cut the deficit in half on an RBI single by Arrington in the eighth inning, and despite getting the tying run on base in the ninth inning, could not tie the score.
Â
Henderson allowed eight hits and four runs in 4 2/3 innings for the Warhawks, before giving way to
Will Collins (0-1), who tossed 1 1/3 innings of no-hit relief.
Shelton Clevenger,
Jake Chase,
Tommy Vickers,
Jax Morris and
Logan Coleman combined to allow just one hit over the final innings of the contest.
