MONTGOMERY, Ala. ----- Senior
Troy Jones scattered six hits and struck out seven in a 3-0 complete-game shutout to lift the Auburn University at Montgomery baseball team past No. 21 West Florida Friday evening in the opener of its Gulf South Conference series at Q.V. Lowe Field.
With the win, the Warhawks improved to 11-7 overall and 9-7 in GSC play. The Argonauts fell to 12-5 on the year and 11-5 in league games.
"It was huge to come out and set the tone for the series," Jones said. "I seemed to get in the zone about the fifth or sixth inning. I felt like I had more command of my slider and was locating my fastball. We know they will be coming out and trying to sweep us tomorrow, so we will need to come ready to play."
Jones, who lowered his season ERA by 1.54 with the shutout, threw 117 pitches in the outing, working around the six hits and walking just two. Jones allowed just two runners to reach scoring position in the contest.
Offensively, fellow senior
Quinterrious Arrington led the Warhawks with three hits and a walk, scoring twice and swiping two bases in the game. Sophomore
Mario Galloway added a pair of hits, including an RBI double for AUM. Senior
Grayson Blackwell also contributed a single.
For the Argos, Adam Imwalle finished with two hits.
The Warhawks took the lead for good off UWF starter Ryan Brewer (4-1) in the bottom of the first inning, plating an unearned run, when Arrrington scored on an error. Arrington led off the game with a single down the left-field line and came around to score when
Zach Feaster's grounder was misplayed by West Florida's shortstop, allowing Arrington to move to third. On the same play, the Argos centerfielder, Dylan Menhennet, bobbled the ball, allowing AUM's leadoff man to score from first.
Arrington upped the lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning, when he led off the frame with a double, before moving to third on a sacrifice by
Casey Henderson and scoring on a Brewer wild pitch.
AUM plated its final run of the contest in the sixth inning when Galloway roped a double off the centerfield wall, plating
Matthew Marfice, who worked a one-out walk.
Brewer took the loss for West Florida, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) in six innings of work. Hunter Lucase tossed a hitless final two frames.
The Warhawks and Argos will conclude their series Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m., from Q.V. Lowe Field.
