HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery baseball team recorded nine runs on 15 base hits and got seven strong innings of work from starting pitcher
Micah Henderson in their 9-3 series-opening victory over Alabama-Huntsville on Friday, March 19.
With the win AUM improves to 12-9 overall and 10-9 in Gulf South Conference play. UAH drops to 10-11 overall and 9-10 in conference action.
Three Warhawks accounted for three hits or better at the plate, led by
Corey Armstrong's four-hit, three-RBI performance. Armstrong's stellar day at the dish was highlighted by a bases-loaded double in the fifth inning that helped blow the game open.
Zach Feaster and
Sage Smelley each knocked three hits and scored a run, with Feaster driving in three runs and Smelley slugging AUM's other double in the contest.
Casey Henderson and
Mario Galloway both logged a pair of base hits, with C. Henderson scoring three times and Galloway picking up an RBI.
M. Henderson (5-1) needed just 97 pitches to toss seven scoreless innings on the way to his team-high fifth win of the season. The senior righty notched three strikeouts while inducing 11 ground-ball outs.
AUM tallied four runs over their first two at-bats, highlighted by a three-run first inning. Feaster plated the game's first run on an RBI single to right, followed by an RBI infield single from Galloway and a sacrifice fly from Smelley to give the Warhawks a 3-0 advantage after one.
Feaster would go on to give the Warhawks a 4-0 lead his next time up in inning number two, knocking a two-out single through the right side to bring home C. Henderson.
The Warhawks added four more in the fifth, with
Jackson Ceman bringing in the first run of the frame on an RBI groundout and Armstrong delivering the big blow in the inning with his two-out, three-RBI double down the right field line to put AUM up 8-0.
Feaster would supply AUM with one more insurance run in the seventh on a two-out single to left to give the Warhawks a 9-0 lead.
The Chargers used a three-run blast in inning number nine to break up the shutout and give way to the 9-3 final score.
AUM was able to take advantage of clutch, timely hitting on Friday by cashing in for five of their nine runs with two outs.
The Warhawks will wrap up their road series with the Chargers on Saturday, March 20 with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
