ROME, Ga. – Senior hurler
Bailie Barnes needed just 52 pitches to complete a complete game shutout in the Auburn University at Montgomery softball team's 12-0 win over Gulf South Conference foe Shorter on Sunday morning.
The Warhawks move to 20-4 on the year with an 11-4 record in Gulf South Conference action. Dating back to 2020, AUM has won 37 of their last 41 games.
Abby Krueger was one of two players to have multi-hit games. The senior backstop went 2-2 with two home runs and a grand slam in the Warhawks' blowout victory of Shorter.
The first inning proved electric again for the Warhawks as the first four batters registered hits. After a leadoff single from
Allie Miller,
Olivia Aycock tripled to score the game's first run. The next two batters,
Molly Cobb and Krueger, cleared the bases with home runs to give
AUM a 4-0 lead after the first inning.
Krueger came up again with the bases loaded in the top of the second with Cobb,
Gracie Harris, and
Lauren Haskins on base. After hitting her first grand slam against Union a few weekends ago, the senior launched her second home run of the day to double the AUM lead.
The Warhawks went back-to-back for the second time in as many innings when the next batter,
Gia Martin, launched her ninth home run of the season to put the Orange & Black up by nine after two innings of action.
Haskins continued her power-filled weekend in the top of the third when she tattooed a ball that cleared the fence, scoring
Morgan Duschell and put the Warhawks over the 10-run threshold.
The scoring in the third game ended when newcomer
Kenna Coleman brought home Harris later in the third inning on a sacrifice fly. AUM was able to ride the efficient work of Barnes for the rest of the game, taking the contest 12-0.
AUM softball will return home for the first time since March 13 next weekend when they host the University of West Georgia in a three-game series at the AUM Softball Complex. Game one is scheduled for Friday, April 2, at 6 p.m.
