Baseball Clinches Series Over Union with Doubleheader Sweep

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Auburn Montgomery baseball team took both games of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader against Union University on Saturday, March 6, claiming game one 4-3 and game two 10-7.

AUM improves to 9-6 overall with the wins and 8-6 in GSC play, marking for four-straight victories for the Warhawks.

GAME ONE
Casey Henderson served as the hero at the plate for AUM in game one. The senior infielder knocked the eventual game-winning double with two outs in inning number nine that drove in three runs and put AUM on top 4-3.

Jackson Ceman added a hit, a run, and an RBI while Joseph Hartsfield accounted for a double and a run in game one.

Hunter Viets allowed no earned runs over five innings of work, while striking out five on his way to the no-decision. Logan Coleman (1-1) allowed just one hit and struck out a pair over the final 1.2 innings to grab his first win of the 2021 season.

The Bulldogs grabbed the first run of the game in inning number one and the 1-0 score would hold up all the way until the bottom of the eighth inning, when the Bulldogs tallied two more to go up 3-0.

The Warhawks loaded up the bases in the ninth with just one out after Grayson Blackwell led off the frame with a walk, followed by a Mario Galloway single and an Ethan Well's hit batsman. A Ceman hit-by-pitch brought in the first run of the frame, setting the stage for C. Henderson's two-out, three-RBI double to right center that would put AUM up for good at 4-3.

GAME TWO
Ceman and Hartsfield both scored a game-high three runs in game two, with Hartsfield logging an RBI and Ceman drawing four walks.

Quinterrious Arrington, Zach Feaster, and C. Henderson all drove in a pair of runs on one hit, with Arrington scoring twice and walking three times.

Matthew Marfice and Sage Smelley both also added an RBI while Corey Armstrong and Galloway registered a hit and a run scored. Galloway additionally knocked the Warhawks' lone double of game two

Micah Henderson (4-0) earned his team-best fourth win behind five shutout innings of work. The senior righty struck out six and allowed just four base hits on the day.

Jake Chase and Tyler Britton combined to toss inning number six, while Sam Steigert (1) surrendered just one earned run over the final three frames to earn his first save of 2021.

AUM wasted no time in getting on the board in game two, scratching one run in the first inning and three in the second. Arrington came across on a passed ball in the first while an RBI single from Hartsfield, an RBI walk from Arrington, and a sac fly from C. Henderson accounted for the damage in the second.

Feaster would supply the next two runs for AUM, with a sac fly in the fourth and an RBI knock in the sixth to put AUM up 6-0.

Union would work their way back into the game with five runs in the sixth on four hits, however, trimming AUM's advantage to just 6-5.

AUM responded with a run in the seventh on an RBI walk from C. Henderson and three in the ninth to gain a comfortable 10-5 advantage. A Bulldog error, followed by an RBI hit batsman from Marfice and a sac fly from Smelly paved the way for AUM in the top of the ninth.

The Bulldogs would plate two more runs on a pair of hits and a Warhawk error in the ninth, but Steigert would keep the Union bats at bay and help AUM hold on for the 10-7 win.

The Warhawks will go for the series sweep in game three on Sunday, March 7. First pitch from Jackson, Tenn. is set for 1:00 p.m.
