MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery baseball team picked up their fifth win in six tries on Tuesday, March 9 with a 13-3 drubbing of Tuskegee University in seven innings.
The Warhawks improve to 10-7 overall with the victory, while Tuskegee drops to 1-4.
Casey Henderson and
Jackson Ceman combined to drive in seven of AUM's 13 runs, with Henderson recording four hits on four RBI's and Ceman logging three RBI's on a pair of hits and two runs scored.
Joseph Hartsfield registered a pair of hits, including a double, with two runs scored and an RBI.
Grayson Blackwell knocked a double and scored a run while
Zach Feaster and
Mario Galloway both added a run and a hit.
Will Collins (2-2) earned the win on the mound for AUM. The sophomore lefty struck out a career-high five batters while allowing just two hits over three innings of work.
Blake Sheffer tossed two scoreless innings in his 2021 debut, striking out two and retiring all six batters he faced.
Tyler Britton struck out one over a scoreless seventh inning of work for the Warhawks.
The Warhawks pushed across multiple runs in each of their first three at-bats to jump out to a 7-0 lead over the Golden Tigers, plating three in the first and two in both the second and third.
C. Henderson got AUM on the board first in inning number one with an RBI single, followed by a
Matthew Marfice sacrifice fly to center and an RBI knock from Hartsfield. A C. Henderson RBI single and a
Sage Smelley sac fly brought home AUM's runs in the second while a sac fly from
Quinterrious Arrington and a C. Henderson single up the middle accounted for the damage in the third.
The Golden Tigers got back to within striking distance in the sixth inning with a three-run homer to make it a 7-3 game, but AUM would respond with three of their own in the bottom half of the frame to go back up by seven at 10-3. RBI walks from Ceman and C. Henderson, in addition to a
Reid Whitaker sac fly, accounted for the damage in the inning.
The Warhawks pushed across the three runs needed to get the mercy-rule victory in inning number seven. Ceman plated the first two runs of the inning on a two-RBI base hit up the middle while
Ethan Wells scored the 13th and final run of the game on a wild pitch.
AUM batted .444 (12-27) on the day, including a mark of .368 (7-19) with runners on base.
The Warhawks totaled a season-best four sacrifice flies while also stealing a season-high three bases. An AUM batter reached base to lead off an inning in five of seven frames.
The baseball team will return to action on Friday, March 12 when they host the University of West Florida for game one of their three-game Gulf South Conference series. First pitch from Q.V. Lowe Field is set for 5:00 p.m.
