CLINTON, Miss. – The Auburn University at Montgomery baseball team dropped their second-straight game, falling to Gulf South Conference foe Mississippi College 3-2 in the series opener on Saturday night.
The Warhawks drop to .500 this year in 2021. AUM stands at 15-15 on the year, with a 13-13 record inside Gulf South action.
Troy Jones was stellar for the Warhawks on the mound in game one, going eight strong innings, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out six Choctaws in the losing effort.
Landon Pritchett and
Quinterrious Arrington were the only two Warhawks to record multi-hit games, as both players netted two hits in game one.
The Warhawks were able to get on the board early against the Mississippi College starter. Two hits early on put runners on first and third for AUM, allowing Pritchett to knock home Arrington on a fielder's choice to score the game's first run.
Mississippi College did not wait long to get back the run after AUM opened the scoring in the first, as MC was able to touch Jones for a solo shot in the bottom of the second to tie the game at a run apiece.
Both pitchers settled in after the second inning, as both Jones and Payton Russel were cruising through the opposing lineups, holding the Warhawks and the Choctaws off the board in the middle innings.
The silence was broken in the bottom of the sixth when a leadoff double was brought home with an RBI single through the right side of the infield, giving Mississippi College a 2-1 advantage over the Orange & Black.
Jones was able to work around trouble to keep the damage at one run in the sixth but ran into some more trouble two innings later when he got tagged for his second home run of the game, giving MC a 3-1 lead heading into the top of the ninth.
AUM did not go quietly in the ninth inning. Three straight singles from the Warhawks loaded the bases with nobody out in the inning. Following a strikeout,
Sage Smelley ripped a single into left field, scoring a run for AUM.
With the game on the line with two outs, the Warhawks had their leadoff hitter at the plate, but Arrington went down on strikes, securing a 3-2 win for Mississippi College in the opener of a three-game series.
Games two and three from Clinton will take place tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
