CLINTON, Miss. – The Auburn Montgomery baseball team dropped a pair of extra-inning games at Mississippi College on Sunday, April 18, falling 2-1 in 10 innings in game one and 5-4 in 12 innings in game two.
With the loss, AUM's record now sits at 15-17 overall and 13-17 in Gulf South Conference play. Mississippi College improves to 15-15 overall and 12-13 in league action.
GAME ONE
Micah Henderson made quick work of the Choctaws on the mound in game one, needing just 98 pitches to toss a career-high nine innings in the no-decision. The senior right-hander struck out a pair while allowing just one run and inducing 13 ground-ball outs.
Sam Steigert (0-1) took the loss in relief in the tenth inning.
Landon Pritchett led the Warhawks at the plate with a pair of hits in game one, while
Quinterrious Arrington logged AUM's lone RBI.
Corey Armstrong accounted for AUM's run in game one while
Joseph Hartsfield,
Sage Smelley, and
Ethan Wells all added a hit.
Run scoring was at a premium in game one, with the Choctaws breaking the scoreless tie in fifth inning. MC took advantage of a leadoff walk and a pair of hits in the frame to crack the scoreboard and go up 1-0.
The Warhawks responded in inning number seven with the tying run via an RBI fielder's choice from Arrington. AUM loaded up the bases with one out in the inning but were only able to scratch one run as a caught stealing of home ended the frame and kept the game at 1-1.
The Warhawks loaded up the bases with two outs in the top of the tenth, but were unable to bring home the go-ahead run. MC brought across the game-winner on a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the frame after a throwing error put runners on the corners with nobody out.
GAME TWO
Pritchett tallied a game-high three hits in game two while also scoring a run.
Hartsfield logged two hits with two runs driven in while Arrington recorded a pair of hits and a run batted in. Arrington also slugged the Warhawks lone double of game two.
Mario Galloway registered a pair of hits with a run scored while Armstrong and Steigert both scored a run.
Hunter Viets struck out a season-high 10 batters over a season-high 10 innings of work. The senior righty scattered three earned runs over while giving up six hits.
Jax Morris (0-1) took the loss, giving up the game's final two runs over 1.1 innings of relief work.
MC tallied the game's first three runs with a run in the first inning and a pair in the third to go up 3-0.
The Warhawks cut their deficit to just one run in the sixth when Hartsfield ripped a two-RBI single to center to plate Armstrong and Pritchett and make it 3-2.
Arrington came up big for AUM with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, socking an RBI double to left center to bring in Galloway and tie the game at three-all.
The Warhawks were able to take advantage of an MC throwing error in the 12th to go up 4-3, but the Choctaws would answer in the bottom half of the frame with two runs on one hit. MC took advantage of a leadoff double, followed by a hit batsman, a walk, and a game-winning sacrifice fly.
The Warhawks outhit MC 9-7 in game two but left 13 runners on base over the course of 12 innings.
AUM starting pitching combined to toss 19 of the day's 22 innings, while also stranding 14 base runners over the course of the day.
The Warhawks will be back in action on Friday, April 23 against Montevallo for game one of their final home series of the season. First pitch from Q.V. Lowe Field is set for 3:00 p.m. (CST).
