Baseball Breaks Out Big Bats to Salvage Doubleheader Split on Senior Day

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery baseball team salvaged a doubleheader split by erupting for 23 runs on 22 hits in game two against the University of Montevallo on Sunday, April 25 after falling 8-4 to the Falcons earlier in the day.

With the split, AUM's record now sits at 16-18 overall and 14-18 in Gulf South Conference action. Montevallo holds a record of 12-20 overall and 9-20 in league play. The Warhawks' 22 hits marked for the most in a game since the 2019 season while their 23 runs scored marked for the most scored in a game since the 2007 season.

Casey Henderson went 8-11 over the course of both games while tying the AUM single-game hit record by going 6-6 in game two. The senior infielder also drove in six runs in game two.

AUM knocked five home runs over the course of the day, with Mario Galloway slugging a solo shot in game one and a two-run blast in game two. Corey Armstrong, C. Henderson, and Landon Pritchett all also went yard over the course of the day

Prior to Sunday's twin bill, seniors Quinterrious Arrington, Sage Smelley, C. Henderson, Troy Jones, Micah Henderson, and Grayson Blackwell were all recognized as a part of the pregame "Senior Day" Ceremony.

GAME ONE
C. Henderson and Smelley both totaled a team-high two base hits in the setback, with C. Henderson scoring once. Armstrong and Galloway both logged a run, a hit, and an RBI while Pritchett and Blackwell both recorded a hit and an RBI.

Hunter Viets (3-6) allowed just two earned runs over eight frames on his way to the tough-luck loss. Viets struck out eight and surrendered just seven hits.

Montevallo struck first in the game with a run in the second via an AUM wild pitch. Their lead would hold until inning number four, when Galloway would launch his first career home run as a Warhawk, followed by an RBI sac fly from Pritchett in the fifth to give AUM a 2-1 lead.

After seeing the Falcons score twice in the sixth to go up 3-2, AUM would answer with a run in the sixth on an Armstrong solo shot and a run in the seventh on an RBI knock from Blackwell to put the Warhawks up 4-3.

Montevallo would go on to tally five runs in their final two at-bats, with four of their five coming in the unearned variety.

GAME TWO
C. Henderson's six-hit day tied Ken Folger's six-hit contest against Talladega College in 1990 for the most hits in a single game in program history. His six RBI's marked for the most in a game since Houston Davenport's six-RBI performance against Georgetown College on March 15 of the 2016 season.

Pritchett and Smelley both added four RBI's on three hits with two runs scored while Arrington and Galloway both added three RBI's with four runs scored. Arrington also swiped three bags to bring his season total to 21.

Zach Feaster added three hits, with a run scored and an RBI while Armstrong picked up a pair of hits with a run scored and Matthew Marfice accounted for a hit, an RBI, and two runs scored.

Micah Henderson (6-3) tossed all seven innings en route to his team-high sixth win of the year. The senior righty struck out eight and allowed just three earned runs on five hits.

After seeing the Falcons take a 1-0 lead in the first, AUM would go on to pound out four runs in each of their first two at-bats to hold an 8-1 lead after two. Galloway, Feaster, Smelley, C. Henderson, Pritchett, and Marfice all logged an RBI over the first two innings, with Pritchett and Smelley both driving in a pair.

AUM broke the game open in inning number three by scoring nine runs on eight hits to take a 17-1 lead. A pair of two-run homers by C. Henderson and Galloway highlighted the scoring action in the frame, with Arrington also recording a two-RBI single in the inning.

The Warhawks went on to tally four runs in the fourth and a pair in the sixth before conceding two runs to the Falcons in the bottom of the seventh and giving way to the 23-3 mercy-run victory.

AUM batted .590 (23-39) in game two, highlighted by a team batting average of .600 (18-30) with runners on base. Despite stranding 10 runners, the Warhawks reached base to lead off an inning in four of six frames in game two.

The AUM Baseball Team will play the rubber match of their three-game series with Montevallo on Monday, April 26 at 3:00 p.m. (CST) from Q.V. Lowe Field.
