Feaster’s Grand Slam Guides Warhawks to Series-Clinching Win Over Montevallo, 8-3

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Sophomore catcher Zach Feaster belted the go-ahead grand slam as part of a five-run eighth inning that helped lead the Auburn Montgomery baseball team to a series-clinching 8-3 win over Montevallo on Monday, April 27 from Q.V. Lowe Field.

With the win, AUM improves to 17-18 overall and 15-18 in Gulf South Conference play. The Falcons fall to 12-21 overall and 9-21 in GSC action.

Feaster matched the season-high for single-game RBI's with six on the day, with a run scored and a two-RBI double in the sixth inning that tied the game up at three-all.

Casey Henderson also added a pair of hits and two runs scored while Sage Smelley and Grayson Blackwell recorded a hit and an RBI. Blackwell accounted for the Warhawks' third and final extra base hit of the game with a solo shot in the eighth.

Troy Jones struck out four batters over seven innings of work in the no-decision. Jones surrendered just three earned runs on seven hits.

Logan Coleman (2-1) grabbed the win in relief, tossing two scoreless innings and giving up just one hit out of the bullpen.

Montevallo tallied the game's first run via an RBI groundout in the second. The 1-0 score would hold all the way until the sixth when the Falcons would get a pair of RBI knocks to extend their lead to 3-0.

The AUM comeback commenced in inning number six when Smelley plated C. Henderson with an RBI single up the middle to make it just 3-1. Two batters later with two away, Feaster would smack a screaming line drive off the top of the left-field wall to bring home a pair and tie the game at three.

Feaster's go-ahead grand slam in the eight inning was set up by a leadoff hit batsman by Joseph Hartsfield, followed by a bunt base hit from C. Henderson, a sacrifice bunt from Smelley, and an intentional walk to Landon Pritchett to load the bases. The sophomore backstop promptly unloaded on a first-pitch slider that sailed over the left-center wall for his team-leading third home run of the season, giving AUM a 7-3 advantage.

Blackwell would follow suit two batters later with his team-high third bomb of the season to left-center, giving AUM an added insurance run and putting them on top 8-3. Coleman would work around a two-out double to slam the door shut for the win in the ninth.

"It made sense for them to do it," Zach Feaster said about the intentional walk to Pritchett that loaded up the bases prior to his go-ahead grand slam. "It set up the double play and Landon had been swinging it well all series. Ingram has a good slider, so I was sitting on it early in the count. Luckily, I got one and was able to put a good swing on it and get it elevated."

AUM's two home runs on the day marked for eight by the Warhawks for the series total, their most over a three-game stretch all season. AUM left just two runners on base all day, while the Falcons stranded five.

The Warhawks will be back in action on Tuesday, April 27 against Columbus State University for their final home game of the 2021 season. First pitch from Q.V. Lowe Field is set for 5:00 p.m.
