LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery softball team took both games of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader at West Alabama on Saturday, May 1, winning game one 11-3 in five innings and game two 4-1.
The game-one victory marked for Head Coach
Eric Newell's 500th career victory as a head coach. Newell accomplishes the feat in just his 15th season as a head coach, now boasting an all-time head coaching record of 501-194.
The pair of victories run AUM's current winning streak to 14 games while bringing their record to 34-5 overall and 24-5 in GSC action.
GAME ONE
Gia Martin led AUM at the plate in game one with three runs on three hits and a pair of RBIs. The freshman infielder also slugged a pair of home runs in game one.
Molly Cobb,
Abby Krueger, and
Jaycie Walker all drove in two runs on one hit with a run scored. Krueger accounted for a two-RBI double while Walker socked a two-run home run.
Kathryn Fallen also went yard in the contest while
Olivia Aycock recorded a pair of base hits.
Bailie Barnes (12-1) logged her team-high 12th win in the circle, giving up no runs on just two hits in three innings of work.
Cydney Sizemore and
Brinkley Yevak combined to toss the final two innings of relief for the Warhawks.
The Warhawks blasted a pair of solo shots in inning number two, with Fallen breaking the scoreless tie with her fourth homer of the season to center field. Martin would follow suit just two batters later with her 10th home run of the season down the right field line to double AUM's lead to 2-0.
Inning number three featured Walker launching her fifth home run of the season to make it 4-0, followed promptly by a six-run inning in the top of the fourth to make it 10-0. The Warhawks took advantage of a Tiger throwing error, an RBI walk from
Lauren Haskins, and a pair of two-RBI knocks from Cobb and Krueger to account for the damage in the inning.
The Tigers would go on to scratch three runs in the bottom of the fourth on three hits, but Martin would put AUM back up by eight with her second home run of the day in the top of the fifth. The solo homer marked for Martin's team-leading 11th of the season.
AUM outhit West Alabama 11-5 in game one, batting .407 overall and .455 (5-11) with runners on base. The Warhawks additionally batted .429 (3-7) with runners in scoring position in game number one.
GAME TWO
Aycock collected a team-high three base hits in game two while also driving in one on an RBI double. The sophomore infielder collected five total base hits on the day and reached base in every at-bat.
Allie Miller logged a pair of hits with a run scored and an RBI while recording the Warhawks' other double in game two. Cobb and Martin both accounted for an RBI sacrifice fly while
Hannah Dailey and
Parker Pinholster both registered a run and a stolen base.
Alanna Goble (12-1) tossed all seven innings for her fifth complete game of the season. Goble surrendered just one run on one hit while inducing 16 fly-ball outs.
The Warhawks once again drew first blood in game two, tallying a pair of runs in the top of the third to grab the early 2-0 lead. An Aycock RBI double to center, followed by an RBI sacrifice fly from Cobb accounted for the damage in the frame.
The Tigers' lone run of the game came in inning number four via a sac fly and cut the Warhawk's lead to 2-1. A leadoff hit by pitch, followed by a walk and a sacrifice bunt, helped setup the scoring opportunity for UWA.
AUM was able to add a pair of insurance runs in the top of the sixth, with Martin driving in a run on a sac fly and Cobb singling up the middle to bring home the game's final run and put the Warhawks up 4-1.
Of the Warhawks' seven hits in game two, four came with runners in scoring position. AUM pitching did not give up a hit with runners on base during game two.
The Warhawks' will play the third and final game of their series at West Alabama on Sunday, May 2. First pitch from Livingston, Ala. is set for 1:00 p.m.
