Warhawks Split Final Day Of Reddie-Tiger Invitational

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Auburn University at Montgomery volleyball team split the final two matches of the Reddie-Tiger Invitational on Saturday morning after a 3-0 win over Ouachita Baptist and a 3-1 loss to Henderson State.

A 2-2 showing at the tournament results in the Warhawks' 7-5 record heading into conference action. Henderson State improved to 10-2 on the year, while Ouachita Baptist fell to 4-7.

The Warhawks were led offensively in game one by Nyah Whittlesey, who finished the game with nine kills. Mariane Cassiano had a great game in the early morning, recording seven kills and 17 digs against the Tigers.

Ouachita Baptist got the better of the Warhawks to start the match. The Tigers grabbed five consecutive points to begin the first set. With the Tigers leading 8-3, the Warhawks stormed back and took 13 of the next 15 points to take a commanding 15-10 lead. Ouachita was never able to get back into the game after the long run from AUM as the Warhawks took the first set 25-17.

The start of the second set was played much more evenly as a 7-6 Tiger lead was broken by a kill from Cassiano that sparked a run that saw the Warhawks take a 10-7 lead. AUM put the game away when they extended their 14-12 lead to 18-13 after a kill from Ylenia De Mango. AUM was able to hold off a late Tiger attack as they needed extra time to take the second set 27-25.

The third set was all AUM as an early 11-6 lead was quickly stretched out to a 15-8 advantage after a kill from Maria Nicolau. Six straight points eventually added an 11-point cushion for AUM, and the Warhawks never let up, taking the third set 25-14 and the match 3-0.

Keren Santana was a big standout in the final game of the Reddie-Tiger Invitational, leading the Warhawks in kills in game two of the day with 11 while adding four digs. Reann Cato added a career-high 21 digs in the match against the Reddies.

AUM was able to gain a slight advantage over Henderson State early on in the first set after a De Mango kill gave AUM a 9-7 lead. The Warhawks battled to keep the game tied at 21-21 late in the first set, but the Reddies were able to finish the first set by taking four of the next five points to win set one 25-22.

Henderson State was able to jump out to a big lead in the second set, establishing a 9-4 advantage over AUM. The Warhawks were able to later cut the lead down to one after a kill from Carla Butler ran the score to 14-15. After a four-point run gave the Reddies a 20-15 lead, AUM rattled off five straight of their own to tie the game. However, Henderson State was able to come away with the win, taking the set 25-22.

The third set was played much tighter to start than the previous two sets. A Reddie attack error gave the Warhawks a 16-13 lead and sprung the Warhawks to a set-three win after kills from Whittlesey, and Giada Pais-Marden put the set away for AUM.

The fourth set was tightly contested by both teams. The Orange & Black found themselves leading 17-16 late in the fourth set, looking to extend the match to a deciding fifth frame. However, Henderson State finished the fourth set by taking nine of the last 10 points to win 25-18.

The Warhawks will open up Gulf South Conference action in their next match when they travel to Carrolton, Ga., when they face the West Georgia Wolves on Tuesday, September 21 at 6 p.m.
