Warhawks Take GSC Opener 3-1 Over West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Auburn University at Montgomery volleyball team began Gulf South Conference play on Tuesday night on the road against West Georgia and came away with a commanding 3-1 win over the Wolves.

The Warhawks open GSC action with a 1-0 record and stand at 8-5 overall. West Georgia, meanwhile, falls to 6-4 on the year after dropping their conference opener.

Keren Santana had a complete performance for the Warhawks in her Gulf South debut, she was tied for the game lead with 17 kills and added six digs to her scoreline. Four Warhawks netted double-digit dig efforts, with Mariane Cassiano leading the way with 24. Carla Butler (12)
Isadora Nicolai, (11), and Reann Cato (10) posted at least 10 digs.

The intensity of a Gulf South Conference match was felt right off the hop against the Wolves as both teams were fighting for a lead in the first set. After a kill by Nyah Whittlesey that tied the game at 10, West Georgia tallied three straight points to take the lead.

AUM, however, was able to respond quickly after the timeout and strung together five straight points to take a 15-13 lead over the Wolves. A ball-handling error from Nicolai brought the score to 20-18 in favor of AUM, but Giada Pais-Marden put the set on ice for AUM with a 25-20 set one win.

Despite a 4-1 advantage for the Warhawks in the second set, West Georgia jumped out to score five straight points to take a 6-4 lead. The Wolves would later extend their lead to 13-8, but a Butler ace cut the lead to two. The Warhawks were unable to find their footing offensively to close out the second set, falling to UWG 25-17 in set two.

West Georgia was able to use the momentum found at the end of the second set and use it in the third, jumping out to a 15-11 lead. With the Wolves up 17-14, a Ylenia De Mango kill capped off a 5-0 run to give AUM an 18-17 lead. The Warhawks were able to close out the third set on a high note, winning the third set 25-22 after a service error.

The Wolves' 8-7 lead in the fourth set was the last time UWG would see a lead in the match. After that point, to give UWG the lead, AUM would go on a 9-1 run to give the Warhawks a 15-9 lead. The Orange & Black kept their foot on the gas and took the final set of the match 25-16 to win the GSC opener 3-1.

The Warhawks will remain on the road to open GSC action as they will travel to Pensacola, Fla., to face nationally-ranked No. 16 West Florida. The action from the UWF Field House is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
