Men’s Soccer Sinks Statesmen in Rain-Soaked Battle, 2-1

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – On an afternoon that saw the AUM Soccer Complex transformed into a quagmire from heavy rain and water buildup from previous days, the Auburn Montgomery men's soccer team pulled off a dramatic 2-1 victory over Gulf South Conference foe Delta State University.

The win on Sunday marks for AUM's third in a row and improves the Warhawks' record to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in GSC play.

Renan Diniz delivered the game's first goal in minute number 53 following a scoreless first half. The senior midfielder fired in a flush penalty kick from just outside of the box that found the top left corner of the net for his second score of the season.

After conceding the equalizer in minute number 59 to the Statesmen, the 1-1 score would hold all the way until Arnaud Baron's penalty-kick goal put AUM back on top for good in minute number 83. The senior midfielder's score marked for his second of the season.

"A lot of credit goes to Delta State today; it's the best Delta State team we've seen in a long time," Head Coach Matthew Thorne said. "The water-logged field was not ideal for either team's approach, but both teams came in to battle today. Overall, I am very pleased to get an excellent win over a well-coached team. Getting two wins in a Friday-Sunday GSC schedule is never easy, so any time that we are able to achieve that, we are very pleased. The boys fought tooth-and-nail for each other and showcased their drive and mentality, even after conceding the equalizer in the second period. Now, we focus on recovery and getting ready for next weekend on the road."

AUM was edged in total shots by Delta State 11-10, but tallied seven shots on goal to the Statesmen's four. Both teams amassed four corner kicks on the day.

In goal, Alexander Kraus hauled in three saves en route to improving his 2021 record to 4-1.

The men's soccer team will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 24 when they hit the road to take on #8 Union University. Kickoff from Jackson, Tenn. is slated for 7:15 p.m. (CST).
