Men’s Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw at #24 Union

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Auburn Montgomery men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw against the #24 ranked Bulldogs of Union University on Friday, Sept. 24 in Gulf South Conference play.

The draw marks for AUM's first of 2021 and brings their overall record to 4-1-0 and their GSC record to 2-0-1.

Franck Kouentchi punched in the Warhawks' lone goal in minute number 85, which gave the Warhawks a 1-0 lead at the time.

AUM was five seconds removed from coming away victorious, but a handball call inside the box in minute number 90 resulted in a Union penalty kick that would find the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.

Despite only scoring once, AUM fired off a season-high 27 shots, with a season-best 14 shots on goal. The Orange and Black also took a season-high 11 corner kicks in the contest.

Phillip Spickenbaum took a team-high five shots, with three on frame. Both Renan Diniz and Kouentchi took four shots on the night, with three of Kouentchi's coming on goal

"I'm very proud of our lads," Head Coach Matthew Thorne said. "We created more chances tonight than any other game this season against a very good ranked team. Most nights I feel we put at least two of our chances away, I'm proud how our lads kept pushing for the winner. Always tough to take a penalty call with four seconds left in the game but we learn from it and move on."

The men's soccer team will return to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 26 at the University of Mobile. Match time from Mobile, Ala. is set for 4:00 p.m. (CST)
