PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Auburn University at Montgomery volleyball team dropped a road Gulf South Conference contest to No. 16 West Florida on Friday night 3-0.
The Warhawks fall to 8-6 on the year with a 1-1 record in GSC play. West Florida, meanwhile, rises to 13-1 and remains perfect with a 2-0 mark in conference action.
The Warhawks were led offensively by
Carla Butler, who recorded a team-high 12 kills in the loss to the Argos.
Mariane Cassiano once again led the team in digs with 19 while also recording five kills and three assists.
AUM got off to a hot start to the match and led West Florida 11-7 early on to force an early Argo timeout. West Florida, however, was able to rebound and go on a run, cutting the lead down to one before taking their first lead of the night. The nationally-ranked foes kept the pressure on and eventually took the first set 25-19.
The second set saw the Argos continue their momentum against the Warhawks. West Florida jumped out to an early 7-2 lead over AUM before they stretched it out to a 15-9 advantage.
Giada Pais-Marden had a great second set with six kills, but the Argos proved too much to handle and took the second set 25-18.
Despite a total of eight kills from Pais-Marden and seven kills from
Nyah Whittlesey, the Warhawks were unable to mount a comeback in the third set, dropping the final frame 25-22 and falling to Argonaughts 3-0 in the match.
AUM will wrap up their long road trip to begin the season on Tuesday, September 28, when they will travel to Albany, Georgia, to take on Albany State. The action is set to begin at 5 p.m.
