MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In a back and forth Gulf South Conference game, the Auburn University at Montgomery women's basketball team was bested by West Alabama 60-50 on Monday night at the AUM Gymnasium.
The Warhawks drop to 5-9 overall and an 0-8 mark in conference play. West Alabama improves to 12-5 in 2021-22 with a 6-3 record in Gulf South action.
Demaurea Moore played the complete game for the Warhawks against the Tigers, netting her first double-double with the Warhawks after scoring 11 points and grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds.
Jordan Brewster inched closer to 1,000 career points after leading the Warhawks in scoring with 17 points. She now stands at 966 career points and 272 career 3-pointers.
Defense was king to start the game as baskets from Catlin Carter, and Brewster gave the Warhawks a 5-4 lead over West Alabama at the first media timeout. Both teams struggled from the field in the first quarter, shooting under 30 percent but an Allasha Dudley 3-pointer at the buzzer gave AUM a 12-9 lead over UWA after 10 minutes of action.
Brewster's hot shooting day continued to start the second quarter, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers to add to AUM's lead early in the second. West Alabama would get some looks down in the paint halfway through the second, but AUM kept a five-point lead at the media timeout in the second. West Alabama held the Warhawks scoreless for two minutes after the media timeout, and a late 3-pointer gave the Tigers a 25-23 lead at halftime.
After an early 3-pointer from Brewster to start the quarter, the Tigers responded with a 7-0 run and kept the Warhawks scoreless for over four minutes, stretching their lead to 32-26 over AUM. The Warhawks stormed back after the media timeout with a 7-0 run of their own to take a 33-32 lead with three minutes left in the quarter. Both teams continued to trade baskets down the stretch of the third quarter, resulting in an eventual 41-39 UWA lead.
Brewster connected on an early jumper to tie the game at 41 before West Alabama responded with four straight points to begin the process of growing their lead. The Tigers lead sat at 47-43 with six minutes to go in the fourth quarter.
West Alabama was the benefactor of a 6-1 run to stretch their lead to 53-46 with under three minutes to go in the fourth quarter, and a late 3-pointer from the Tigers gave West Alabama their biggest lead of the night at 56-46. Dudley and the Warhawks were able to cut the Tigers' lead to six with 49 seconds left, but West Alabama took the game 60-50 after converting on their free throws down the stretch.
AUM will remain at home and will host GSC opponent Christian Brothers on Thursday, January 27. The action from the AUM Gymnasium is slated to begin at 6 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear white to the contest, and free t-shirts will be given away to AUM students.
