Warhawks Tabbed For Home Loss After Comeback Falls Short

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery women's basketball team attempted a furious comeback in the fourth quarter but ultimately fell to Gulf South Conference foe Mississippi College 50-47 on Monday night at the AUM Gymnasium.
 
AUM falls to 6-10 on the year and 1-9 in conference play while the Choctaws improve their record to 11-8 on the year and earn their sixth Gulf South win to move to .500 on the year in conference action.
 
Catlin Carter led the team in scoring again against the Choctaws, connecting for 15 points. AUM's Demaurea Moore and Allasha Dudley were also in double figures against MC. Tamia Willingham-King led the team in rebounds with seven.
 
The Warhawks scored one second into the game after winning the tip but were held scoreless for four minutes but kept a 5-4 lead with just over five minutes to play in the first quarter. Mississippi College responded with a 6-0 run after the media timeout to go ahead 10-5 and would lead 10-7 after 10 minutes.
 
Mississippi College extended their run to 10-2 to start the second quarter, extending their lead to 15-7 over AUM. A layup from Moore ended the Choctaw run and brought the score back to 15-9. The Warhawks were able to cut the deficit to four late in the second period, but Mississippi College led 29-21 after hitting five of their last six shots down the stretch.
 
Dudley aided the Warhawk offense to start the third quarter, connecting on a 3-pointer on AUM's opening possession. AUM would go scoreless for over five minutes in the third, allowing MC to extend their lead to 35-24. Mississippi College continued their effective shooting to end the third quarter and led 44-30 after 30 minutes of action.
 
The Choctaws kept the Warhawks at a comfortable distance to start the third quarter, leading by 12 with just over five minutes to go in the game. Moore brought the game to within double digits to cap an 8-0 run, but Mississippi College led at the under-five mark of the fourth despite being held scoreless for five minutes.
 
A pair of Carter free throws brought the MC lead back down to six to extend AUM's run late in the fourth. Mississippi's scoreless streak was broken at the 2:26 mark of the fourth quarter, but the Warhawks were able to maintain a six-point deficit with 2:22 to go. A Kailyn Farrell layup late in the game brought the Choctaw lead to four with 55.1 seconds left in the fourth period.
 
Farrell would hit a free throw to get AUM to within three points with 45 seconds to go to extend AUM's run to 15-2. After two missed free throws from MC, the Warhawks had the ball with 28.7 seconds to go in the fourth and would convert on a layup to make it a one-point game with 12.2 seconds left. Mississippi College hit one of two free throws, but the Warhawks turned the ball over on the ensuing possession, allowing the Choctaws to come away with a 50-47 win.
 
The Warhawks will hit the road for their next game as they will travel to Cleveland, Tennessee, to take on the Lee Flames on Saturday, February 5. The action against Lee is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
