Volleyball Drops GSC Contest at Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. —- The Auburn University at Montgomery volleyball team won the first and fourth set against Gulf South Conference opponent Montevallo on Tuesday night, but it was not enough as the Falcons claimed the 3-2 victory at Trustmark Arena. 
 
Alessia Cappai led the Warhawks with 15 kills, four blocks, and a career-high of 21 points. Amber Bretwisch picked up 23 assists and Savannah Sebek added 22 assists. Brynne Hopeau-Lampitoc had a season-high of 21 digs.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • AUM started the match off winning the first set 25-16. With the score 20-16, the Warhawks rallied with five straight points to win the first set. 
  • The Falcons jumped to a 6-0 lead in the second set off four attack errors. The Warhawks cut the Falcon lead to 9-7, but Montevallo responded and tallied four straight points to regain the momentum and eventually won the second set 25-15. 
  • The third set had back-and-forth action until the score was tied at 18 and Montevallo scored five points in a row to have a 23-18 lead. Ylenia De Mango and Alessia Cappai scored back-to-back points for AUM, but the Falcons rolled off two points in a row to claim the third set and a 2-1 lead. 
  • With the score tied at eight in the fourth set, AUM rolled off two kills and an attack error on Montevallo gave the Warhawks the momentum to carry them to tie the match at 2-2. 
  • In the fifth set, AUM jumped to a quick 2-0 lead and Montevallo responded with a four-point run to give them the 4-2 lead. The Falcons never lost the lead in the fifth set and pushed on to a 15-11 victory in the set to earn the 3-2 win. 
STATS OF THE MATCH
  • AUM tallied 54 kills and Montevallo had 53. 
  • AUM had 10 service errors and 29 attack errors. 
  • The Warkawks had 80 digs and the Falcons gained 91. 
  • Kyla Ffrench had four blocks and 5.5 points. 
  • De Mango scored 14 points for AUM. 
  • Kendall McCain added 15 digs and 10.5 points. 
  • Bretwisch and Sebek had 22 and 23 assists on the night. 
  • Montevallo's Casey Hendrixson had 25 digs and eight aces.

"We played extremely well, and Montevallo had a lot of players offensively that are consistent, and we were able to manage that part of the game well," head volleyball coach Flavia Siqueira said. "We poorly executed some of the skills that were in our control, especially serving. We had errors in crucial moments and that impacted the game." 

UP NEXT

The Warhawks return to the AUM Athletics Complex on Friday afternoon against Lee in a GSC matchup. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
