West Alabama Races Past Men's Basketball in Gulf South Conference Action

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Turnovers and cold-shooting plagued the Auburn University at Montgomery men's basketball team on Saturday night in an 81-51 loss to the University of West Alabama. 

The Warhawks got a game-high 20 points from Jalen Gaston, but the visiting Tigers scored 26 points off of 21 AUM turnovers.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • West Alabama leaped out to an 8-3 advantage, but the Warhawks got jumpers from Joseph Lanzi and Jalen Gaston to make it 8-7 at the first media timeout.
  • A four-plus minute scoring drought saw the Tigers build an 18-7 lead before a Sam Youngblood three-point jumper pulled the Warhawks within eight points at 18-10.
  • That is as close as the AUM would get for the rest of the half, as the visitors closed out the final 11:22 of the first half on a 26-8 sprint.
  • West Alabama's relentless defense helped the squad build its largest lead at the 5:26 mark of the second half, when Thaddeus Williams was fouled and drained a pair of free throws.
NOTABLES
  • The Tigers outscored AUM 26-9 in points off turnovers.
  • UWA also out-rebounded AUM 41-23 and held advantages in bench scoring (26-6) and second-chance points (22-5).
  • Jalen Gaston scored a game-high 20 points for the Warhawks. 
  • Williams led the way for UWA with a team-high 19 points.
  • AUM blocked 13 shots on the night, including six from James Graham and three from Jelal Williams. The 13 blocks in the game is a new school record for the Warhawks.
  • The Tigers shot 48 percent from the floor (29-of-61) despite going just 1-for-10 from three-point territory. 
  • Both teams combined to shoot 3-for-21 from three-point land.

The Warhawks travel to Rome, Ga. on Monday, Nov. 28 to take on the Shorter University Hawks at 6:30 p.m. in Gulf South Conference action.
