Valdosta State Pushes Past Men's Basketball

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery men's basketball team was defeated by Valdosta State University Saturday evening inside the AUM Athletics Complex in Gulf South Conference action. 
 
The game featured 18 lead changes and it was tied on eight occasions. Valdosta State was able to pull ahead late in the ball game to win.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Joseph Lanzi made a three-pointer on a fast break to give the Warhawks a 7-5 lead with 17:19 to go in the first half. Valdosta State responded with a three to retake the lead. 
  • Sam Youngblood made a layup to take a 23-18 lead with nine minutes remaining in the first half. Five points was the largest lead AUM had in the first half. 
  • VSU responded and Caden Boser made a layup with 5:37 left on the clock to give the Blazers another lead. 
  • Roderick Smith made a jumper with 23 seconds left on the clock to tie the game up at 25. The two teams remained scoreless for the remainder of the first half. 
  • AUM jumped to their largest lead of the night at the 14:14 mark in the second half after Jalen Gaston buried a shot from beyond the arc. 
  • Valdosta State chipped away at the lead and Boser made a layup to give Valdosta State the lead with just under nine minutes on the clock. 
  • The teams traded the lead several times until Valdosta State's Jay Rucker made two free throws to give the Blazers the lead with just over five minutes left. They held the lead for the remainder of the game and came out with the 77-71 win. 
NOTABLES
  • Joseph Lanzi led all scorers with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting. He brought down four rebounds and dished out two assists. 
  • Jalen Gaston tallied 16 points and posted six rebounds. 
  • Travis Anderson and James Graham chipped in with 10 points each. Anderson recorded five assists. 
  • Roderick Smith and Deven Tucker both gathered nine rebounds and combined for 12 points. 
  • Valdosta State scored 42 points in the paint and shot 4-of-17 from beyond the arc. VSU was 21-of-31 from the charity stripe.

AUM will host the University of West Florida in Gulf South Conference action on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the AUM Athletics Complex.
