MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery Men's Basketball team held Valdosta State to a season-low 34 percent on field goals and led from start to finish in its 72-59 Gulf South Conference victory over the Blazers on Thursday, Feb. 10.
AUM additionally held the Blazers to its second-lowest point total of the season in the win, which improved the Warhawks' record to 9-14 overall and 6-9 in GSC action.
Isaiah Hart led a trio of Warhawks that scored in double figures with a 21-point performance. The senior guard shot 7-11 from the field and a perfect 7-7 on three throws.
Jeremiah Bozeman and
James Graham both logged double-doubles, with Bozeman recording 18 points and 12 rebounds and Graham tallying 12 points and 13 boards. Graham also dished out a career-high six assists.
Roderick Smith accounted for eight rebounds and four points while
Deven Tucker registered eight points and a pair of boards.
AUM knocked down six of its first 12 shots to begin the game, with a fade-away jumper by Hart at the 12:26 mark putting the Warhawks up 15-9.
Valdosta State answered by scoring seven of the game's next nine points to trim the Warhawks' advantage to just 17-16. AUM would go on to outscore the Blazers 14-7 over the half's final nine minutes to take a 31-23 lead into halftime.
The Warhawks set the tone in the second half with a 16-1 run from the 16:08 to the 12:13 mark in which they knocked down six of nine shots and held the Blazers to zero field goals while forcing four turnovers to go up 53-31.
VSU clawed its way back into the game, however, with a 19-6 run over the next seven minutes. The Blazers knocked down three crucial threes and forced six Warhawk turnovers over the run to see their deficit shrink to 59-50 with 4:31 to play.
AUM kept its foot on the gas over the next two minutes by outscoring VSU 7-2 to keep the lead at double digits and give them enough breathing room for a drama-free finish.
The Warhawks shot 60 percent (25-42) on two-point shots while posting an overall field-goal efficiency of 47 percent (27-58) for the night. AUM came up big all night at the charity stripe, finishing the game at 84 percent (16-19) on free throws.
The Warhawks will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 12 against West Florida for homecoming. Tip-off from the AUM Gymnasium is set for 4:00 p.m. (CST).
