Women’s Basketball Comes Up Short Against Delta State

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Auburn University at Montgomery women's basketball team dropped a road Gulf South Conference contest to Delta State 60-52 on Thursday night to kick off the last road trip of the season.

The Warhawks drop to 1-15 in conference action on the year with a 6-16 mark overall. Delta State moves to .500 on the year with an 11-11 record and a 9-8 record in GSC play.

After scoring her 1,000th career point in her previous game, senior guard Jordan Brewster led the Warhawks in scoring against Delta State after posting 21 points. Catlin Carter added 12 points of her own and led AUM in rebounding with eight.

Brewster and the Warhawks had no problem scoring against the Lady Statesmen to begin the game as Brewster connected on two 3-pointers early to help give AUM a 9-4 lead. After Delta State went up 11-9, AUM responded with five of the next seven points to lead 14-13 after the first quarter.

Delta State answered the call to start the second quarter as they held AUM to just six points through the first eight minutes of the quarter to take a 27-23 lead. The Warhawks would finish strong, however, taking seven of the last nine points of the half to cut the Delta State lead to 29-27.

The Lady Statesmen would maintain their four-point lead four minutes into the second half, but AUM would go on a quick 5-0 run to run the score to 36-35 in favor of the Warhawks. The two GSC programs would trade baskets down the stretch in the third period, resulting in a 43-43 tie heading into the final 10 minutes.

Delta State started the fourth quarter hot as the Lady Statesmen raced out to an 11-3 run to take a 54-46 lead halfway through the period. A 3-pointer from Brewster and a jumper from Carter were not enough to close the gap for AUM as Delta State continued their offensive pressure to take the contest 60-52.

AUM will play their final game of the season in the state of Mississippi on Saturday when they travel to Clinton to take on Mississippi College. The Warhawks' meeting with the Choctaws is set to begin at 2 p.m.
