CLINTON, Miss. – Despite taking the lead into the halftime break, the Auburn University at Montgomery women's basketball team dropped a road Gulf South Conference contest to Mississippi College 75-65 on Saturday afternoon.
The Warhawks drop to 6-17 overall on the year and stand at 1-16 in Gulf South play. The Lady Choctaws improve to 14-11 on the year with an even 9-9 mark in conference action.
Catlin Carter led the Warhawks in scoring against Mississippi College, netting 20 points. Rookie forward Kailyn Farrell was the other Warhawk to net double-digit points, scoring 12 in the contest in Clinton.
AUM had one of their best quarters of the season to open play against the Lady Choctaws. The Warhawks outscored Mississippi College 22-13 in the opening period. Carter and the Warhawks led 14-7 four minutes into the contest, and a late layup from Jamya Tyus gave AUM a nine-point lead after 10 minutes.
The start of the second quarter saw AUM extend their lead to 13 before a run from Mississippi College cut the Warhawk lead to eight. Three free throws from Jordan Brewster extended the AUM lead to 11, but an 11-2 run from the Lady Choctaws ran the score to 34-32 at the half.
Mississippi College took the lead two minutes into the third with an early 3-pointer. AUM would net 12 points in the third quarter but would stay in the game with points from Tyus, Carter, and Demaurea Moore that allotted Mississippi College with a 55-46 lead after the third quarter.
A layup with 6:54 left in the fourth quarter from Carter cut the Lady Choctaw lead to 59-55 before Mississippi College ran their lead back to nine with 4:30 left in the contest. Derienne Black nailed a free throw with 1:39 left in the fourth cut run the score to 68-64, but it would be one of the last points of the game for AUM as they would fall 75-65 on the road.
The Warhawks will play their final road game of the season on Tuesday, February 22, when they travel to Rome, Georgia, to take on the Shorter Hawks. The action from Georgia is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m.
