Baseball Falters Late in GSC Opener to West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Despite leading from innings three through eight, the Auburn Montgomery Baseball Team fell 9-7 in its Gulf South Conference opener at West Georgia on Friday, Feb. 25.
 
With the loss, AUM's record falls to 9-6 overall and 0-1 in GSC action.
 
Brody Syer drove in a team-high three runs for AUM, all coming on a bases-loaded double in the eighth inning. The two-bagger extended his current hitting streak to 15 games.
 
Caleb Beaver knocked a team-high two hits on the night with a run score while Zach Feaster and Joseph Hartsfield each added a hit and an RBI.
 
Starting pitcher Luke Turner struck out five batters over 5.1 scoreless innings while giving up just four hits in the no decision. Michael Myers tossed a season-high 2.2 innings out of the bullpen while Sam Steigert (0-1) was credited with the loss after surrendering the game's final five runs.
 
The Warhawks cracked the scoreboard in inning number three, when a Jackson Ceman RBI fielder's choice led to another run being scored on a UWG throwing error to put AUM up 2-0. Beaver led off the inning with an infield hit, followed by a sac bunt from Joseph Hartsfield, a Clayton Phillips single to right, and a walk by Nick Freeman to lead the bases for Ceman.
 
Syer provided three big insurance runs for AUM in the eight with his bases loaded double that put the Warhawks up 5-0. A Freeman leadoff walk, followed by a Kasey Clark hit batsman and a Dew bunt single loaded up the bases prior to Syer's three-run double.
 
Feaster brought in Syer with an RBI single, followed by an RBI sac fly from Hartsfield to make it 7-0.
 
West Georgia answered in their next at-bat in the bottom of the eighth with four runs on four hits while also taking advantage of a a pair of AUM errors.
 
The Wolves tallied five runs in the bottom ninth inning, with a two-RBI double making it 7-6 in AUM's favor and a walk-off three-run homer giving way to the 9-7 final score.
 
The baseball team will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 26 for games two and three of it's Gulf South Conference Series with the Wolves. First pitch from Carrollton, Ga. is set for 12:00 p.m. (CST)
