CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Auburn Montgomery Baseball Team split games two and three of its Gulf South Conference doubleheader at West Georgia on Saturday, Feb. 26, taking game two 8-4 and dropping game three 6-5.
The split brings the Warhawks' record to 10-7 overall and 1-2 in GSC action.
GAME ONE
Jax Morris (1-1) tossed the final 4.1 scoreless innings of relief for AUM to grab his first win of the season. Morris struck out a pair while giving up just one hit.
Starting pitcher
Clay Slagle surrendered four runs over 4.2 innings for the no decision while striking out five.
Kasey Clark drove in a game-high two runs on three hits while
Zach Feaster and
Zach Dew each logged three hits with two runs scored and an RBI. Both also knocked a double.
Nick Freeman,
Brody Syer, and
Brook Brannon all knocked a pair of hits, with Freeman and Brannon each driving in a run.
AUM struck first in game one with a pair of runs in the first via an RBI double from Feaster and an RBI single from Clark.
West Georgia answered in the top of the second with a three-run shot, but the Warhawks would answer with a pair of runs in the top of the third. A UWG wild pitch and a Brannon RBI fielder's choice made up for the run-scoring action in the frame.
After conceding their final run of the game to UWG in the fifth on a solo shot, AUM went on to add a run in the sixth and take the lead on a Clark RBI knock, and get three more in the seventh to go up 8-4. A West Georgia throwing error, an RBI sac fly from Freeman, and a Dew RBI knock accounted for the damage.
GAME TWO
Feaster and Dew once again had the hot bats, with both logging a pair of hits, a run scored and an RBI. Feaster tallied the Warhawks' lone extra-base hit with a double in the fourth.
Matthew Marfice and Freeman both registered a hit and an RBI, while Clark knocked a hit and scored a run.
Andrew Cronan allowed three runs over 5.2 innings of work in the no decision.
Mason Elmore gave up two earned runs over 0.2 innings while
Will Collins (0-2) was responsible for the game-winning run and took the loss.
UWG cracked the scoreboard first in game two with a solo shot to go up 1-0. AUM responded with five runs on four hits in their next at-bat to take a 5-1 lead. An RBI double by Feaster, RBI singles from Dew and Marfice, and an RBI fielder's choice from Freeman in which an additional run was scored on a throwing error accounted for the damage done.
From there, UWG would go on to get a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run single, and three in the seventh. A balk with runners at second and third made the score 5-4 in AUM's favor, followed by a walk-off, two-run homer in the same at-bat by the Wolves to clinch the win.
