Derrick Slugs #15 Warhawks To Series Sweep Over West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The 15th-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team earned two commanding victories over Gulf South Conference foe West Georgia 9-3 and 15-0 on Saturday afternoon to complete the series sweep.

The Warhawks improve to 11-3 on the year with a perfect 3-0 record in GSC action. The Wolves fall to 4-11 overall with an 0-6 record in Gulf South play.

Freshman arm Morgan Ferguson had an excellent start against the Wolves in the first game of the day. She took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and finished the game allowing three runs on four hits while striking out six Wolves to earn her sixth win of the season.

Rookie slugger Derrick connected on three home runs in game one against the Wolves. Her first career jacks aided the Warhawk offense in the 9-3 win. She finished the day going 4-4 at the plate with three big flies and three RBIs.

The AUM offense got started early and took the lead against West Georgia in the first inning. Gia Martin connected on a fly ball into the outfield that was able to score Haley Ann Frank from third to put AUM out in front. Derrick would connect on her first home run of the day a few batters later to put the Warhawks ahead by two.

After Frank scored on a wild pitch in the third inning, Shelby Newsome raced a single down the left-field line to score Martin and double the AUM lead. In the following inning, Lexi Love scored AUM's fifth run of the game after she was the second run of the game allowed via the wild pitch.

The Warhawks broke out the big guns in the top of the fifth inning as Martin connected on her third home run of the season on a shot to centerfield. Derrick followed suit by launching her second homer of the game over the centerfield fence to give AUM a 7-0 lead.

AUM's scoring ended in the seventh inning but not before Derrick slugged her seventh long ball of the afternoon. Margaret Morgan helped in the scoring later in the inning, placing a ball down the right-field line to score Faith Wheat to give AUM a 9-0 lead.

Starter Ferguson had been dealing before the seventh inning, allowing zero hits on the day against the Wolves. UWG's Kristyn Nix ended the no-hitter with a double to open the inning and sparked a three-run inning for West Georgia before Ferguson could close out the game.

Derrick continued her incredible day at the plate in game two against the Wolves. The freshman infielder went 1-2 at the plate in game two and slugged her fourth home run of the day in the second inning.

Alanna Goble got the start in game two against West Georgia and went the distance in a shortened game. She threw all five innings for the Orange & Black, allowing four hits while striking out three to earn her first win of the season.

AUM once again jumped out in front in the first inning, securing runs on a Martin single and a wild pitch to jump ahead by two runs in the first. AUM added more runs in the second as an Aycock double scored Lexie Bullock, leaving Martin to clean up the runs on a two-run single.

Derrick concluded her stellar day at the plate with a two-run homer to give the Warhawks a 7-0 lead. Aycock earned another RBI in the third inning, scoring Bullock after grounding out with the bases loaded to run the score to 8-0.

Newcomer Wheat got in on the offensive fun in the top of the third, singling to left field to score Derrick. Love would later add a two-run double to end the scoring in the third inning. AUM's scoring concluded in the fifth inning when Margaret Morgan connected on an RBI single to give AUM their eventual 15-0 win.

The Warhawks will now turn their attention to the home opener on Tuesday, March 1. AUM will host Peach Belt Conference foe Georgia Southwestern at the AUM Softball Complex in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
