MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery Baseball Team secured a Gulf South Conference series sweep over Mississippi College with a 9-4 victory in game three against the Choctaws on Monday, March 14.
The win improves AUM's record to 15-9 overall and 5-4 in GSC action.
Zach Dew and
Clayton Phillips both drove in a game-high three runs, with Dew slugging his second homer in as many days and Phillips knocking a two-RBI double.
Zach Feaster knocked a team-high three hits while also scoring a pair of runs.
Jackson Ceman logged his team-leading 10th multi-hit game of the season, in addition to scoring twice and driving in a run.
Kasey Clark recorded a hit and an RBI while
Brook Brannon added two hits and two runs scored.
Clay Slagle (3-3) allowed just three runs on eight hits over five innings to earn the win.
Jax Morris conceded just one run over three innings while
Sam Steigert recorded the final three outs in the ninth.
AUM drew first blood in the contest with a pair of runs in the third on RBI singles up the middle from Ceman and Clark. A leadoff single from
Joseph Hartsfield, followed by a one-out knock from
Nick Freeman, helped set up the scoring opportunities.
After seeing the Choctaws tie up the score their next at-bat in the top of the fourth on a two-RBI single, AUM responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame to go up 4-2. A passed ball, combined with a Phillips sac fly, accounted for the damage done in the inning.
MC knocked a solo home run in the top of the fifth, but AUM would answer with a two-run blast to left field from Dew its next time up to make it 6-3. The home run, which was preceded by Ceman reaching base via throwing error, marked for Dew's third of the season and second big fly of the series.
The Warhawks added another run in the sixth on an RBI single from Dew and got their final two runs on a two-RBI double from Phillips to go up 9-3. The Choctaws added one more run via solo home run in the top of the eighth before giving way to the 9-4 final.
The Warhawks batted .388 (14-36) on the day, with every batter in the lineup recording a hit and six of nine scoring at least once. For the series, the Warhawks posted a team batting average of .365 (35-96).
The baseball team will be back in action for game one of a three-game GSC home series against Alabama Huntsville on Friday, March 18. First pitch from Q.V. Lowe Field is set for 6:00 p.m.
