Baseball Out-Slugs UAH to Take Series, 17-13

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery Baseball Team pounded out a season-high 20 hits to score 17 runs and clinch the rubber match of its Gulf South Conference series against Alabama Huntsville 17-13 on Sunday, March 20.

The win improves AUM's record to 17-10 overall and 7-5 in GSC action.

Caleb Beaver led AUM at the plate with a five-hit, five-RBI performance. Beaver knocked a go-ahead grand slam in the fifth inning and slugged a pair of doubles while finishing just a triple shy of the cycle.

Brody Syer knocked a three-run homer in the contest while Zach Feaster and Joseph Hartsfield also went yard. Jackson Murphy and Clayton Phillips each knocked three hits with Murphy scoring a game-high four times.

Mason Elmore (1-0) earned the win in relief. Elmore tossed a scoreless seventh inning to help pick up his first relief win as a Warhawk.

Sam Steigert (2) notched his second save of 2022 by throwing the final two innings for AUM.

AUM tallied its first two runs of the game in the second, when a throwing error brought home the game's first run, followed by an RBI triple from Phillips.

UAH responded with a five-spot on three hits in the third to go up 5-3. A three-run homer and a two-run triple accounted for the damage done in the frame.

AUM would answer back in the top of the third with six runs on eight hits. Back-to-back homers from Syer (three-run) and Feaster (solo) put the Warhawks up 6-5, and was followed by RBI doubles from Murphy and Beaver to go up 8-5.

The Chargers once again responded with a big inning, bringing across five runs in the top of the fifth to go up 10-8. AUM retook the lead on Beaver's grand slam in the bottom of the fifth, his first home run as a Warhawk, to take a 12-10 lead.

A two-run double by UAH tied the score at 12-all in the top of the sixth, but the Warhawks would respond with a solo shot from Hartsfield in the bottom half of the frame to take a 13-12 lead.

The Chargers would tie up the score one more time, with an RBI double in the seventh making the score 13-all. From there, the Warhawks would get an RBI single from Zach Dew and an RBI walk from Feaster in the seventh, in addition to a sac fly from Ceman in the eighth which led to another run scoring on an errant UAH throw.

The Warhawks' four home runs and six doubles on the day both marked for a season-high. AUM batted .455 (20-44) in the contest, marking for a season-high.

The Warhawks will return to action on Saturday, March 26 when they begin a three-game GSC set at West Florida with a doubleheader against the Argos. First pitch from Pensacola, Fla. is set for 1:00 p.m.
