MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery Baseball Team took advantage of three two-out RBIs and got five shutout innings of relief pitching from senior
Sam Steigert to win the rubber match of its Gulf South Conference series against Union University 5-2 on Sunday, April 10.
The win brings AUM's record to 22-15 overall and 12-9 in GSC play. The series victory marks for the Warhawk's fourth in their last five weekends of conference action.
Brody Syer logged a multi-RBI performance for the 11th time this season, finishing the day with three runs driven in on a pair of hits.
Jackson Ceman scored twice and collected a game-high three base hits for his team-leading 16th multi-hit game of 2022.
Zach Feaster recorded a hit and an RBI while
Nick Freeman added a run, a hit, and a stolen base.
Steigert's (2-2) five innings pitched on the afternoon marked for a season high. The senior sidewinder gave up just three hits while striking out three and needing just 64 pitches to retire 15 of the 18 batters he faced.
The Warhawks scored the game's first two runs, taking advantage of a Bulldog throwing error in the first to go up 1-0 and a Syer sac fly in the third to double their lead to 2-0. Freeman, Ceman, and
Caleb Beaver drew consecutive one-out walks in the third to set up Syer's RBI chance.
Union responded with a pair of runs in the fourth to make it two-all. The Bulldogs drew a pair of walks to start the inning and were able to capitalize with an RBI single to left and an RBI fielder's choice.
Feaster came up with the first timely hit of the day for AUM, delivering a two-out knock to left in the bottom of the fifth that put the Warhawk's back on top at 3-2.
Syer followed suit one inning later with a two-RBI single through the right side that brought home Ceman and
Clayton Phillips to put AUM up 5-2. A two-out error by Union kept the door open for the Warhawks and put runners in scoring position for Syer's at-bat.
The Warhawks will return to action on Wednesday, April 13 when they host Tuskegee University at 5:00 p.m. from Q.V. Lowe Field.
