Baseball Bests Bucs Twice To Open Series

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Auburn University at Montgomery baseball team used clutch pitching to take both games of the doubleheader against Gulf South Conference foe Christian Brothers. AUM won 4-2 in game one before holding on for a 6-5 win in game two.

After the two wins, the Warhawks stand at 27-17 in 2022 with a 15-11 mark in Gulf South Conference play. Christian Brothers, meanwhile, falls to 10-31 this season with a 6-21 mark in conference play.

The Warhawks climbed on the back of starter Andrew Cronan in game one. The junior earned his eighth win of the season after going the distance while allowing one earned run and striking out four batters.

Offensively, the Warhawks were led by Zach Dew, Kasey Clark, and Clayton Phillips, who all netted multi-hit games for AUM. The bottom of the order went a combined 4-11 with two RBIs against Christian Brothers.

AUM saw themselves fall behind early in the contest, as the Buccaneers tallied a run in the first inning, as an RBI single scored an unearned run for Christian Brothers. The Warhawks would be held off the scorecard until the fourth inning until Brody Syer tied the game on a sac fly.

While Cronan held down the Christian Brothers offense, Zach Feaster gave the Warhawks their first lead of the day on an RBI single to score Dew to put AUM ahead 2-1 after six innings of play.

An eventful eighth inning started in the top half after Clark doubled in the right-centerfield gap to score two runs, extending the AUM lead to 4-1. Christian Brothers attempted a comeback in the bottom half of the inning, as they scored a run to cut the Warhawk lead in half, but Cronan was able to hang on for the win.

In game two, the Warhawks got another long outing from their starter. This time, it was Luke Turner who earned his sixth win of the season after throwing eight innings while allowing just two earned runs while recording nine strikeouts.

Matthew Marfice launched his second home run of the season in game two and finished the day going 2-3 at the plate with three RBIs. Clark netted his second two-hit outing of the day while Joseph Hartsfield went 2-4 at the plate with two RBIs.

Similar to game one, Christian Brothers struck first, netting an RBI single in the opening frame to take an early 1-0 lead over AUM. Hartsfield, in the fourth inning, tied the game with a single through the left side of the infield.

The game would go into extra innings tied at one as both pitching staffs held the offense in check. Marfice was able to break the tie in the top of the eighth after launching a home run over the left-field wall to put AUM ahead.

Hartsfield and Clayton Phillips tallied RBI singles later in the inning to extend AUM's lead to 6-1, heading into the bottom of the eighth. Things got dicey for AUM in the bottom of the frame, as Christian Brothers would bring the game to 6-5, but Turner would hang on to clinch the doubleheader sweep for AUM.

The Warhawks will wrap up their road Gulf South Conference schedule tomorrow afternoon when they conclude the series with the Buccaneers at noon.
