#5 Softball Repeats As Gulf South Conference Regular Season Champs

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The fifth-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team completed the defense of their Gulf South Conference regular-season title on Saturday afternoon after a 10-2 win over GSC foe Shorter.

The Warhawks finish the regular season with 25 conference victories. After going 25-5 in GSC play, AUM finished with a 38-8 mark in games overall. AUM was 18-1 at home, 15-5 on the road, and 5-2 in games played in neutral sites.

AUM has earned the top seed in next week's Gulf South Conference tournament, and will look to defend their postseason title as well.

The Warhawks were led on offense in game three against the Hawks by sophomore slugger Gia Martin. She finished the day going 3-4 at the plate while launching her eighth home run of the season. She was tied for the team lead in RBIs in the contest against the Hawks, as she and Chloe Derrick netted three runs batted in.

In the circle, Morgan Ferguson threw four innings of scoreless ball in relief of starter Hannah Creel. Ferguson earned her 14th win of the season after allowing just two hits while striking out one Shorter batter.

The Hawks were able to put the Warhawks on edge through the first two and a half innings, as a pair of throwing errors from Lexi Love and Morgan Ferguson on stolen base attempts gave the Hawks an early 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning.

The Warhawks would send 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the third to put the game out of reach. All eight runs scored in the inning came with two outs. Martin was able to get the scoring started on a two-run double with the bases loaded to tie the game at two.
The next batter, Derrick, was able to bring home Martin and Haley Brown on a two-run single to give AUM their first lead of the day.

A bases-loaded walk from Haley Ann Frank pushed the AUM lead to three, while two more runs would score later in the inning on a passed ball and throwing error from the Shorter catcher. Olivia Aycock added the final run of the inning with an RBI single through the left side.

Martin connected on her eighth home run of the season in the bottom fourth to run the score to 9-2. Derrick finished the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single through the left side to clinch the GSC regular-season title for AUM.

The Warhawks will now wait and see who they will play in the GSC opener on Wednesday in Oxford, Alabama, in the first round of the tournament.
