MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery volleyball team won its fifth straight match by taking its Gulf South Conference opener against West Georgia, 3-0, Tuesday at the AUM Gymnasium.
The Warhawks took the opening set 25-22, before rallying for a 26-24 win in set two. AUM capped the shutout victory with a 25-22 victory in set three.
Alessia Cappai led all players with 10 kills in the match, while
Brynne Hopeau-Lampitoc paced AUM with 12 digs.
Amber Bretwisch added 11 digs, 30 assists and three block assists.

HIGHLIGHTS
- The Wolves opened the first set with four straight points and took a 5-1 lead, forcing a timeout by head coach Flavia Siqueira. Following the timeout, the Warhawks chipped away and used a 6-0 spurt to take a 13-12 lead. AUM continued the run by scoring nine of the next 13 points and took a 22-16 advantage. The Wolves closed the deficit to as few as a pair, 23-21, but kills by Kendall McCain and Cappai sealed the victory, 25-22.
- AUM carried the momentum into set two, running out to a 4-1 advantage following kills from McCain, Cappai and Kyla Ffrench. The Warhawks held a 16-10 lead midway through the set, but UWG outscored AUM 11-4 and took its first lead of the match at 21-20. The Warhawks faced a set point, trailing 24-22, but used a service error, consecutive kills by Ylenia De Mango, and a UWG attack error to gain full control of the match and took a 2-0 advantage.
- The Warhawks took an early 9-4 advantage following a kill by Keren Santana, but the Wolves rallied back and tied the score at 9-9 with five straight points. The set remained close, with the two teams playing to a 16-16 tied, before AUM used a 5-1 run to seize a 21-17 advantage. West Georgia closed the deficit to as few as two points, but Bretwisch closed the contest with her only kill of the contest to clinch the victory.
STATS OF THE MATCH
- Santana finished with seven kills on 20 attacks, adding five digs in the win.
- McCain, the reigning GSC Offensive Player and Freshman of the Week, recorded nine kills, nine digs, three aces and two block assists.
- De Mango posted six kills, three digs and a match-high five block assists, one short of matching her career high.
- Cappai added seven digs and two block assists in the contest.
- Ffrench chipped in five kills and two block assists.
- Zoe LaBreche led West Georgia with eight kills, while Autumn Mayes led the squad with 12 digs.
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will remain home for a GSC contest against No. 11 West Florida Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
