Volleyball Takes Down Valdosta State, 3-0 In GSC Clash

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Auburn University at Montgomery volleyball team swept Valdosta State University 3-0 on Wednesday night inside The Complex in a Gulf South Conference matchup in Valdosta, Georga.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Warhawks started the match off on the right side with a 6-2 lead in the first set after Kaleigh Fizgerald posted a service ace. Valdosta State kept the score within four points, until AUM ended the set with a 10-5 run on the way to a 25-15 victory in the first set after Keren Santana delivered a kill from Amber Bretwisch
  • The Blazers took an early 9-6 lead in the second set. The Warhawks rattled back with a 7-2 run that featured three kills from Maya Thompson to take a 13-11 lead. AUM held onto the lead for the entire set and claimed the 25-20 victory in the set and took a 2-0 lead in the match. 
  • Alessia Cappai accumulated three kills in the first five points of the third set. Valdosta State rolled back and made it 11-9, and then the Warhawks shifted into another gear with a 5-0 run that was followed by another 5-0 run to help push them to the finish line and take the 25-17 third set victory and clinch the match 3-0. 
STATS OF THE MATCH
  • Cappai tallied her 11th game where she has reached double-digit kills with 15 on the night. She is at 487 for her career at AUM. 
  • Savannah Sebek and Bretwisch combined to dish out 30 assists, each had 15. Bretwisch posted 22 games this season with double-digit assists and Sebek's 21st. 
  • Sebek and Myllena Torquetti had 10 digs each.

"I am proud of how well our team played tonight," head volleyball coach Flavia Siqueira said. "Everyone was disciplined and focused during the entire match, regardless of the score being positive or negative for us. Valdosta State has a very talented and athletic team and this win was a great accomplishment for our players."

The Warhawks are back in Gulf South Conference action at home on Saturday, October 28 against University of West Georgia at 1 p.m. for Senior Day
