Legendary Coach Larry Chapman Elected to Alabama Sports Hall of Fame

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Former Auburn University at Montgomery men's basketball coach and Auburn University basketball standout Larry Chapman is set to be inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame on May 4, 2024.  

The Board of Directors of the State of Alabama Sports Hall of Fame announced the Class of 2024 on Wednesday, November 29. The class was selected through a statewide selection committee and the accounting firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers tabulated the votes.

Chapman served as the head coach of the AUM men's basketball team for 37 years, from 1976-2014. In his second season at the helm, Chapman's squad won 20 games, and his ensuing teams posted 15 20-win seasons across his career. 

The 1987-1988 season saw AUM post a 32-3 record and play its way to a berth in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national championship game. Following the 1988 season, Chapman was named the NAIA Coach of the Year. 

Chapman also coached a pair of teams to the tournament quarterfinals. Across his career, 11 teams led by Chapman qualified for the NAIA national tournament. 

Born on April 11, 1941, the Ludowici, Ga. native notched 714 career wins and ranks in the top 70 men's college basketball coaches. In 2005, Chapman was inducted into the inaugural class of the AUM Athletics Hall of Fame.

The Class of 2024 includes Chapman, Mike Anderson (basketball), Penny Hauschild Buxton (gymnastics), John Drew (basketball), Robert Mathis (football), David Palmer (football), Scott Sullivan (baseball), and Mike Washington (football). 

Beginning with the first class in 1969, this will be the 56th class inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. The eight newly elected inductees bring the total number of inductees to 401. The annual induction banquet and ceremony will be held in the Birmingham Ballroom, at the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel, on May 4, 2024.
