MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A total of 28 current or former student-athletes and members of the department of athletics earned degrees from Auburn University at Montgomery during the Fall Commencement ceremonies, held today in the AUM Gymnasium.
In total, more than 600 AUM students earned diplomas during the Summer and Fall semesters. Including in that total were student-athletes or coaches from eight of AUM's varsity sports.
The commencement's distinguished speaker was The Honorable Tiffany B. McCord, a member of the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit Court of Alabama and a 1997 graduate of Auburn University at Montgomery.
Judge McCord has always been a trailblazer in the legal profession. After earning her law degree, she became one of the youngest attorneys to be selected as a Criminal Justice Act panel attorney for the U.S. District Court in the Middle District of Alabama. As an attorney, she worked in the areas of criminal, civil and family law. She also worked with the Federal Defenders Program for the Middle District of Alabama before launching her own private practice. She was also the first African-American individual to serve as Executive Director of a bar association in Alabama.
In 2012, McCord became the first Black female to hold the position of Montgomery County Circuit Clerk. She also served as a volunteer mediator for many years. One of her first initiatives as a judge was to develop and implement a Veterans Court in Montgomery County. McCord was also the first judge to offer the "Lawyer 4 a Day" program.
McCord earned a bachelor's degree in History from AUM in 1997 before completing a juris doctorate from Faulkner University's Jones School of Law in 2002. While at AUM, McCord served as vice president of the Student Government Association.
Her professional associations and memberships have included the Alabama Bar Association, Alabama Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, the National Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, and the Capital City Bar Association. She has served President of the Board of Directors for the Westside Restoration Corporation and as a member of the Board of Directors for Junior League Montgomery, the Kershaw YMCA, Habitat for Humanity and Emerge Montgomery. Additionally, she serves as a member of the Alabama State University's Board of Trustees and is a member of the Torchbearers Class I and Leadership Montgomery Class XXXIII.
