Warhawks Split Twin bill, Take Series From Christian Brothers

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Auburn University at Montgomery baseball team used a come-from-behind win in the nightcap of a Saturday doubleheader to split a twin bill with Christian Brothers University and win the team's opening series of Gulf South Conference play.

The Warhawks fell 5-3 in the opening game of the doubleheader after a late rally fell short, and bounced back to complete a comeback win in the second contest 4-2 to take two-out-of-three from the Bucs on the weekend.

HIGHLIGHTS (GM 1)

  • The Warhawks fell behind 5-0 through five innings, as two-run home runs from Dalton Pyzer and Ben Brocato book ended an RBI single to second for the Bucs.
  • The AUM offense stayed quiet until their final chance in the ninth when the Warhawks posted three runs. 
  • Infield singles by Clayton Phillips and Nick Freeman made it 5-2 and Jackson Ceman added a sacrifice fly to center to plate Cole McWhorter.
  • The Bucs got a lineout to center off to shutdown the comeback, however, and CBU won game one 5-3.

ON THE MOUND (GM 1)

  • Luke Turner (0-2) suffered the loss after he gave up four earned runs, five total, with six strikeouts in six innings of work.
  • Levi Clark worked a scoreless 1.1 innings of relief with two walks and two strikeouts.
  • Lucas Baggett added 1.2 scoreless relief innings with one strikeout against one walk and one hit allowed.

HIGHLIGHTS (GM 2)

  • The Bucs picked up right where they left off in the first game, as Pyzer added a first-inning RBI single to right field to give CBU a 1-0 lead in the first frame.
  • An RBI single from Seth Brown in the fifth inning tacked on one more for the visitors to make it 2-0.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Zach Dew tallied an RBI single after a Kasey Clark triple to pull the Warhawks within a run.
  • Freeman reached on an error and Ceman walked to open the AUM sixth, and Jarren Wright used a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up.
  • Brody Syer smacked an RBI single to left with two strikes to score Freeman, and a fielding error by the Bucs allowed Ceman to score and Syer to move to third.
  • Cooper Doughman added a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2 Warhawks, and AUM held on to secure the win.

ON THE MOUND (GM 2)

  • Clay Slagle drew the start and worked 3.0 innings for AUM. Slagle allowed just one run on five hits against two walks and two strikeouts. 
  • Grant Hickman (1-1) worked 4.0 innings of relief and struck out six, including two in the seventh inning to help seal the win. Hickman allowed just one unearned run on four hits and did not yield a walk.

NOTABLES

  • Levi Clark worked his third consecutive scoreless relief appearance for the Warhawks bullpen, while Baggett worked his fourth straight without allowing a run.
  • Hickman raised his team lead in strikeouts to 18 in 11.2 innings on the season.
  • Six different Warhawks drove in a run in the doubleheader for AUM.
  • Kasey Clark posted AUM's first triple of the season in the day's second game.
  • AUM managed just one extra-base hit between the two games, Clark's triple, but were still able to grab the series win.

UP NEXT

AUM hosts sixth-ranked Columbus State University on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at Q.V. Lowe Field. The first pitch is scheduled to be tossed at 4 p.m.
