NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Auburn University at Montgomery volleyball team got the 2023 season off with a pair of victories in the Newberry College Volleyball Invitational after taking down Francis Marion University 3-0 this afternoon and 3-1 against Newberry in the nightcap on Friday inside the Eleazer Arena in Newberry, South Carolina.

HIGHLIGHTS

• AUM took care of business in the first set with a 25-18 win to gain a 1-0 lead in the match. 
• The Warhawks continued to put their foot on the gas with a 25-15 second set victory to gain match point. 
• In the third and final set, Auburn Montgomery handled Francis Marion 25-14 to pick up AUM's first victory of the year. 

STATS OF THE MATCH

• Alessia Cappai finished the match with 12 kills. 
• Myllena Torquetti made her debut for the Warhawks and posted 12 kills.

HIGHLIGHTS

• The Warhawks jumped to a 11-7 lead, before the Wolves fought back to pick up the first set win 25-20. 
• Auburn Montgomery responded in the second set by taking a early 9-3 advantage. Newberry caught back up to the Warhawks and trailed 12-11, but a 7-3 run for AUM silenced the Wolves and picked up the win in the second set 25-19.
• The third set was back-and-forth as neither team could stretch the lead in the early stages until a 6-0 run gave the Warhawks a spark to push towards the 25-16 victory to take a 2-1 lead in the match. 
• AUM dominated the fourth set jumping to a 13-5 lead and extended it to a 23-9 advantage. The Wolves tried to make a run, but it was not enough as Ruth Sconocchini finished them off with back-to-back kills.

STATS OF THE MATCH

• Giulia Santuari finished the match with 13 kills, just one shy of tying her career record. 
• Sconocchini earned 12 kills on the match and three service aces. 
• Cappai stuffed the stat sheet with 11 kills, 18 digs, and a block assist. 
• Amber Bretwisch posted 18 assists and 12 digs. 
• Kaleigh Fitzgerald tallied 15 digs in her debut for the AUM.

The Warhawks conclude play at the Newberry College Invitational on Saturday, September 2 against Lander University at 1 p.m. and Belmont Abbey College at 4 p.m. in Newberry, South Carolina at the Eleazer Arena.
