Late-Game Rally For Men's Basketball Comes Up Short Against Union

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Despite a 17-1 run in the final 57 seconds of the second half, the Auburn University at Montgomery men's basketball team dropped a 90-84 decision to Union (Tenn.) University on Tuesday night at the AUM Athletics Complex.

The Warhawks put five players in double figures for the second consecutive contest, led by a game-high 21 points from Travis Anderson. Jalen Gaston (15), Jaili Robinson (12), Malachi Rhodes (12), and Joseph Lanzi (10) all added double-digit scoring efforts for the Warhawks.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • AUM led by as much as six points on two different occasions in the opening 20 minutes, but Union scored the final five points of the half to lead 35-32 at the break.
  • Union's 10-3 run to the first media timeout of the second half ballooned the lead to double-digits for the visitors.
  • Seven quick points from Anderson trimmed the lead back to five, 49-44, with 13:40 to play in the game.
  • The visitors built their largest lead of the night, at 22 points, thanks to a 28-12 barrage that saw the Bulldogs lead 89-67 with 57 seconds left in the game.
  • Chappelle Whitney provided a spark off the bench, with nine points and two steals in the final minute of the game to help AUM vault back into the contest.
  • AUM forced five turnovers in the last minute and went on a 17-1 run to trim the lead to six points, but that is as close as the Warhawks got as Union dribbled out the clock in the closing seconds to secure the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Five Warhawks scored double-digit points for the second straight game.
  • Union lost the turnover battle 23-12 but out-rebounded AUM 47-41 on the night. The Warhawks also scored 32 points off of Union's 23 turnovers.
  • Anderson turned in the seventh 20-plus point scoring effort of his AUM career.
  • Rhodes has scored 10 or more points in seven consecutive games and has 10 double-digit scoring games overall this season.
  • Gaston made it five straight games scoring in double figures.
