AUM Falls In Five To Valdosta State

The Warhawks will hit the road for two matches at Union and Christian Brothers this weekend

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The AUM women's volleyball team took the first two sets from Valdosta State before falling 3-2 at the AUM Athletics Complex on Tuesday night.
 
AUM (4-8, 1-2 Gulf South) was led on offense by Greta Corrente and Maya Thompson combining for 31 kills. Corrente had a double-double with 17 kills and 20 digs.
 
The Warhawks hit .161 and finished with eight service aces, 80 digs and six blocks.
 
VSU (7-5, 1-1) hit .227 and got 17 winners from Jojo Smith. The Lady Blazers had eight team blocks as well.
 
Set 1
AUM started fast, getting out to a 8-3 lead. The Lady Blazers closed to within two twice before consecutive kills from Thompson and Corrente stretched the lead to 14-10. AUM hit .324 to take the set 25-20.
 
Set 2
The second frame was a back-and-forth affair with VSU leading 18-15 late. The Warhawks then scored five-straight points, including two service aces from Savannah Sebek for a 20-18 advantage. AUM won the set 25-22 with strong defense, holding VSU to .104 hitting while recording four blocks.
 
Set 3
VSU used its best hitting set of the match to win the third period. The Lady Blazers raced out to an 8-2 lead before AUM tied it with a 7-1 run, led by Corrente serving for the final six in the stretch. The Lady Blazers regained control by virtue of four Warhawk attack errors for a 17-12 edge. VSU scored the five of the final seven points for a 25-18 decision, hitting .323 and limiting AUM to .051.
 
Set 4
Back-to-back kills from Corrente trimmed the VSU lead to 15-14. The Lady Blazers extended their lead with a pair of kills from Mackenzie Murray. Murray and Smith each had four kills in the set as VSU won 25-21.
 
Set 5
The final set saw a back-and-forth swing of momentum from the outset. AUM went ahead 6-3 before a 7-1 VSU run put the Lady Blazers up 10-7. AUM tied it at 12 on two Carly Cooper service aces. But VSU was able to setup match point on a kill and block. They gave AUM hope on a service error that trimmed the deficit to 14-13 but won it on Sabrina Oncins kill, 15-13.

AUM will hit the road this weekend for a pair of matches, beginning Friday night at Union at 6 p.m. The Warhawks will then play at Christian Brothers on Saturday at 2 p.m.
