MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Carlo Russo scored twice to help lead third-seeded AUM to a 5-2 victory over sixth-seeded Trevecca Nazarene in the Gulf South Conference Championship Quarterfinals at the AUM Soccer Complex on Saturday night.
The five goals tied the championship record that was held by five previous teams with the last instance coming in 2012. Additionally, Russo's two scores made him the 27th player in league history to meet that benchmark in the tourney record book.
AUM won its fourth-consecutive game and improved to 10-2-5 on the season. The Warhawks will face second-seeded Christian Brothers (11-3-3) on Thursday at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, Alabama in the GSC Semifinals. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
AUM got things started early, scoring off a
Landon Surratt throw in in the sixth minute. The throw was headed by
Benjamin Hoffman into traffic where
Sean Keane put it away for his fourth score of the year.
Six minutes later Judah Jones put a hard shot past
William Blake to tie it at 1-1.
Lucas Wilson gave the Warhawks the lead back at the 36:16 mark to send the teams into the break 2-1.
Carlo Russo came up big in the second half, putting the game away with goals in the 48th and 50th minutes. They were his second and third goals of the year. His first score came in the 2-0 win over Trevecca in the regular-season match-up on Sept. 29.
Surratt assisted on a goal by
Jamie Ward at the 65:56 point of the match that tied the record for a 5-1 lead. It was Surratt's ninth helper of the year.
Trevecca got a goal from Daniel Shiel that deflected off an AUM defender for a goal in the 70th minute to close out the scoring.
AUM finished with nine shots, putting seven on goal. Blake collected one save in the contest.
