MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Talib Ferrette scored a career-high 26 points to lead five players in double figures as AUM defeated Union, 96-72, at the AUM Athletics Complex on Thursday.
AUM (5-5, 2-3 Gulf South) had five players in double figures for the first time this season while making a season-high eight 3-pointers with 52 percent shooting.
Malachi Rhodes posted his third double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds.
Arion Lewis and
Trent Coleman each had 17 and
Chappelle Whitney had 13.
The Warhawks led for the final 32:23 of the game.
AUM halted a Union fast start with a 10-0 run for an 18-16 lead with 12:25 in the half. A few minutes later
Talib Ferrette drained a transition 3-pointer and
Malachi Rhodes bulldozed his way to the hoop for two, stretching the lead to 29-19.
AUM shot 50 percent in the half and made six 3-pointers, including
Gilbert Croley's buzzer-beater to send the Warhawks into the locker room with a 46-35 advantage.
Union battled to within three in the second half before AUM scored 9-consecutive to regain control, 66-54. The Warhawks later got three-straight buckets from Whitney to stretch the lead to 73-59 with 8:41 remaining.
Union (7-3, 3-1) saw its 3-game winning streak come to an end while shooting 40 percent and committing 14 turnovers. AUM scored 15 points off those mistakes with eight steals.
The Warhawks will return to play on Saturday afternoon when they welcome Christian Brothers (4-6, 0-4) to the Athletics Complex. Tip-off is at 4 p.m.
