Late Surge Sends Lee University Past Men's Basketball

CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- The Auburn University at Montgomery men's basketball team erased a nine-point deficit to tie the game with a little over eight minutes to play, but Lee University used a quick 7-0 spurt to push ahead for good as the Flames authored a 79-69 victory in Gulf South Conference action.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The two teams played the opening 12 minutes mostly within one possession of each other as both sides battled for momentum.
  • Malachi Rhodes pumped in a turnaround jumper at the 11:04 mark to put AUM in front 21-20, but Lee responded.
  • A 20-8 spurt from Lee built a double-digit lead for the home team with 3:58 to go before the break. 
  • Eight points late in the half from Joe Lanzi was part of a 10-4 run from the Warhawks to finish off the first 20 minutes, but Lee held the 44-39 lead at the halftime intermission.
  • After Lee pushed the lead to 10 out of the locker room, Sam Youngblood nailed a three-point basket to keep the Warhawks close.
  • A three-point jumper by Travis Anderson, three buckets from Lanzi, and a pair of jumpers from Jalen Gaston helped AUM tie the game 59-59 with 8:55 to play.
  • Lee immediately pushed the lead back to seven and an Anderson three-pointer at the 6:24 mark of the second half trimmed the lead back down to four, but that is as close as the Warhawks got the rest of the way.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Lazi (19 points), Gaston (16 points), and Anderson (14 points) all scored in double digits for AUM.
  • The Flames out-rebounded AUM 36-32, including 6-4 on the offensive glass.
  • Lee also won the battle in the paint (34-28), had the edge in fastbreak points (24-13), and posted 16 assists to 12 from the Warhawks.
  • AUM had the edge in bench points, 21-14, led by Lanzi's 19 on the night.

  • The Warhawks return home for Homecoming on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 4 p.m. to take on #7/#8 the University of West Georgia at the AUM Athletics Complex.
