MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The AUM men's basketball team had five players score in double figures and shot 44 percent in a 96-85 victory over West Florida at the AUM Athletics Complex on Thursday.
Malachi Rhodes led all players with 23 points and 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double to lead AUM (8-7, 5-5 Gulf South) won for the third time in its last four games.
Paul Lanzi made 4-of-8 from outside on his way to 18 points. He has made at least three 3-pointers in his last five games to improve his season shooting to 57 percent.
Jamir Williams and
Trent Coleman each shot over 70 percent while racking up 16 points apiece.
Arion Lewis had 14 points for his seventh game with at least 10 points.
The Warhawks dominated inside, scoring 52 points in the paint and scored 23 points off 13 UWF turnovers. AUM also held a 42-29 rebounding edge.
UWF (4-12, 3-7) shot 43 percent and we led by Shay Davis' 23 points on 9-of-20 shooting.
The Argonauts had the momentum early, pulling out to a 16-8 lead. The Warhawks battled back to tie it at 20 with 8:30 on the clock. AUM closed the period on an 8-0 run that was punctuated by a
Jamir Williams follow slam just before the final horn, putting the home team up 36-29.
The Warhawks opened a 51-33 lead with a 9-0 stretch early in the second half. They maintained their lead throughout the contest, leading by as many as 23 while shooting 65 percent in the final 20 minutes. AUM found its stroke from outside, making 5-of-10 after missing its first five overall.
AUM returns to the court on Saturday against Valdosta State (14-2, 9-1). Tipoff at the AUM Athletics Complex is set for 3 p.m. following the AUM women's game with the Blazers.
