LIVINGSTON, Ala. – AUM had five players score in double figures and was dominant inside as it grabbed a 82-77 woad win over West Alabama at Pruitt Hall on Thursday.
Chappelle Whitney scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half and
Malachi Rhodes matched him with 19 to go with nine rebounds, six assists and a steal.
Arion Lewis added 16 points and a career-high nine assists.
AUM (7-6, 4-4 Gulf South) had 46 points in the paint and shot a season-best 55 percent overall. The Warhawks' 8-of-14 from 3-point range also resulted in a season-high 57 percent. Five different players made at least one triple, led by
Paul Lanzi with 3-of-4 on his way to 13 points.
Trent Coleman again provided a spark off the bench, finishing with 10 points, including a clutch 3-pointer and three free throws after drawing a foul on a long-range jumper in the final three minutes to help keep AUM in front.
AUM improved to 6-2 on the year in games decided by single digits. The Warhawks also snapped the Tigers' 3-game home winning streak.
UWA (9-6, 5-4) was paced by Rasean Frederick's game-high 22 points and nine rebounds while Travion McCray finished with 19 points, six rebounds, and five assists.
The back-and-forth game had 10 ties and 16 lead changes. The biggest change came with 2:42 remaining when Coleman drained a 3-pointer to break a 73-73 tie. A minute later Rhodes made a free throw and 50 seconds after that, Coleman was hacked on a 3-point attempt and made all three foul shots to put AUM ahead 80-75 with 52 seconds left.
Whitney iced it with two more at the line with six-tenths of a second to play.
AUM will return to action on Sunday at No. 6 Alabama Huntsville (14-1, 9-0). Tip-off at Spragins Hall is scheduled for 4 p.m. The game was moved back a day as a result of the wintry weather that is forecasted to hit northern Alabama and mid-Tennessee on Friday and Saturday.
