AUM Falls in Hard-Fought Battle with Trojans

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery Warhawks volleyball team (2-14, GSC: 1-7) ended a weekend home stand with a four-set loss to the Trevecca Nazarene University Trojans (14-3, GSC: 8-0), on Saturday afternoon inside the AUM Athletics Complex.

AUM was led by Kendall McCain with 19 kills and 15 kills, while Addi Vinson posted 26 assists and added 18 digs.

Trevecca had 16 kills by Mackenzie Martin, while Lily Vanbebber dug out 33 attempts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
Trevecca used a 9-3 start with kills from Ellie Marbet and Mackenzie Martin.

Later, trailing 12-6, AUM won four straight points to cut the deficit to 12-10 thanks to a Sofia Cerebuch and a Kiara Vega ace.

Despite a TNU kill, AUM stayed the course and took a 14-13 lead with a Kendall McCain kill.

The Trojans did come back to even the set at 20 points apiece, but an Anyaliz Rodriguez kill, a block by Rodriguez and Cerebuch and a Courtney Joseph service ace lifted AUM to the 23-20 lead.

Trevecca was able to trim the deficit to 24-23, but a Rodriguez spike on the next rally saw the Warhawks with the 1-0 match lead with a 25-23 set one victory.

AUM recorded 16 kills in the set and added two aces to earn the opening set victory.

Set 2
Set two was a back-and-forth battle, but the visiting Trojans did not relinquish the lead despite a few ties. Kills by AUM's Cerebuch and McCain brought the set back even at  12 points apiece.

Later, tied at 13, the Trojans used a 8-1 run to swell the lead to 21-14.

The Warhawks did make it 22-17 thanks to two kills by Rodriguez and another ace by Joseph, but TNU won the last two points to take the set, 25-17, and even the match at a set apiece.

Set 3
AUM used a quick 5-2 run early in the set after two kills each by McCain and Joseph to take an early 7-4 lead in the third. However, the Trojans responded with six straight points to flip the lead to the visitors, 10-7.

All even at 15, a McCain and Joseph block at the net sparked a 6-3 lead that gave AUM a 21-18 lead.
Unfortunately, the lead would not last long, as Trevecca won the final three points of set three after back-to-back blocks at the net to win, 25-23, to lead two sets to one.

Set 4
Tied at six points apiece in the fourth, the Trojans took a 7-6 lead on a Warhawk attack error and used that for a 9-3 run to swell the lead to 15-9.

Despite AUM making it a 23-20 score with Joseph's 11th kill of the afternoon, but spikes from Kayla Bullard and Martin was enough to take the match in four sets.

UP NEXT
The Warhawks will hit the road for a quick two-match swing, starting at Montevallo on Thursday night.
