Warhawks Earn First GSC Win with Five-Set Marathon over Union

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In its second match in three days, the Auburn University at Montgomery Warhawks volleyball team (2-11, GSC: 1-4) went five sets with a Gulf South Conference opponent. On Saturday, they defeated the Union University Bulldogs (2-10, GSC: 0-5) to earn its first conference win of the 2025 season inside the AUM Athletics Complex.

COACH CASE'S COMMENTS
"I thought the team did a great job of staying composed and executing in key moments. When we made mistakes, we didn't let them snowball like we have in the past. Being down 10 to 3 in the fifth set after dropping the fourth, it would have been easy to fold, but we fought back with a lot of mental toughness. I was really proud of the way we responded, stayed focused, and played our game to finish strong.

Led by Kendall McCain's career high 26 kills and a .426 attack percentage, the Warhawks improved to 2-11 and 1-4 in the Gulf South Conference. The junior also posted her second straight double-double by adding 10 digs.

Anyaliz Rodriguez added 11 kills, seven digs and four blocks, while Taylor Lewis matched a career high 20 digs.

Union had 11 kills and four blocks from Parker Goff, while Natalie Supine totaled 14.5 points on nine kills, six blocks and two service aces.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
Trailing 20-16 late in the first, AUM rallied five straight points to flip the score to 21-20 thanks to three straight kills by Anyaliz Rodriguez to start the rally.

After the Lady Bulldogs won the next two, the Warhawks restored order with the final four points to win the opener, 25-22.

The Warhawks went to work at the net on offense, posting 18 kills in the opening frame on a .552 swing percentage thanks to two attack errors in 29 attempts.

Set 2
There were a total of 12 ties and five lead changes in set two, but despite AUM having a 15-14 lead, Union kept the momentum with the 25-22 win.

Tied 20, UU won five of the final seven points to even the set at one win apiece.

Set 3
Tied at eight, the Warhawks won six straight after kills by Mileah Prince and Addi Vinson to take the 14-8 advantage.

From there, AUM did not relinquish the lead, as they cruised to a 25-15 set three win to lead 2-1.

Set 4
Between five ties and two lead changes, it was a thrilling frame for both squads. Trailing 20-19, Union scored four straight points on a Parker Goff kill to lead 23-20.

Despite strong attacks by Salome Dejesus De La Torres to keep it alive for the Warhawks, the Lady Bulldogs forced the deciding fifth set with a 25-22 win.

Set 5
It was all Union early, as they used a 10-3 start that saw them take seven of eight during the stretch.

However, the Warhawks did not give up. Trailing 11-6, AUM took advantage of three straight mistakes by Union to even the score at 11.

After the teams exchanged the next three points, and with Union up 13-12, AUM, with the help of Dejesus De La Torres, took the final three points to win 15-13.

After getting the side out on a kill and a Lady Bulldog attack error, she served up the match-winning ace to help the Warhawks earn their first win of conference play.
