MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Columbus State University Cougars (3-1) exploded for a 28-point second quarter as it rolled to a 84-59 win against the Auburn University at Montgomery Warhakws women's basketball team (0-4) on Saturday afternoon at the AUM Athletics Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
In the opening quarter, a Letiya Reeves three-point basket helped Columbus State begin the game with a 9-4 burst.
The Warhawks responded to pull within one thanks a pair of free throws and a transition jumper from
Tamora Brown before the Cougars scored five of the final six points to take a 20-15 lead.
A 10-2 sprint by the Cougars, including a pair of three-pointers from Alana Hankerson and Nekaya Williams, helped the visitors open up a double-digit advantage.
Second Quarter
Columbus State continued its offensively-charged second quarter with a balanced attack to balloon the lead to 20 before AUM's
Jaden Toney added two free throws in the final seconds of the half to trim the lead to 46-28 at the halftime intermission.
Third Quarter
The Cougars had their most efficient shooting quarter of the afternoon in the third quarter, as they shot 61 percent (11-for-18) from the field.
Fourth Quarter
A Williams layup early in the fourth quarter pushed Columbus State to its largest lead of the afternoon at 76-44.
AUM closed out the game on 15-8 run thanks in part to six points from Brown and five points from Naveah Small in the closing minutes of the contest.
NOTABLES
- Williams led the way for Columbus State with 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field.
- Samara Saunders (14 points), Nadea Smith (11 points), and Reeves (10 points) also scored in double figures.
- 13 different Columbus State players made at least one field goal in the contest.
- The Cougars shot 47 percent from the field and scored 37 points off 33 AUM turnovers. They also held the advantage in bench scoring (45-19) and points in the paint (64-34).
- Jaden Toney scored 16 points to lead the AUM offensive attack. Brown added 14 points and nine rebounds.
- Small chipped in 13 points and 11 rebounds to record her first career double-double. Her 11 rebounds tied her career best in that category.
- AUM out-rebounded Columbus State 41-34 and had a 17-10 advantage in second chance points with 12 offensive rebounds.
