MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery Warhawks men's basketball team (2-8, GSC: 0-4) lost to the Delta State Statesmen (5-4, GSC: 2-2) 83-65 on Sunday afternoon from the AUM Athletics Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
Delta State opened the game with a three from Bryce Clayton before teammate Samuel Whitmer made a three of his own. Buckets from
Colby Williams,
Chappelle Whitney, and a triple from
Jacob St. Clair tied up the score at 13-13.
The opponents regained their lead after scoring 11 of the next 13 points, behind a pair of threes. Ti' Avian Scruggs broke the streak with a layup, but the Statesmen continued to hit their deep shots and extended their advantage to 33-24 right after the eight-minute mark.
The Warhawks came out of the media timeout with some steam as they scored eight unanswered points to cut their deficit to just one point at 33-32.
DSU scored eight points over the final three minutes of the first half to take a 41-36 lead at the halftime break.
Second Half
The visitors continued to extend their lead early in the second half as they pushed ahead to 58-42 with just over 13 minutes left on the clock.
Five points from Scruggs followed by four from Whitney brough AUM back within 10 points.
Despite a three ball from
Jacob St. Clair, DSU scored 13 of the next 16 points, taking their advantage to 73-54 with less than five minutes remaining in regulation.
The Warhawks battled hard all the way to the end, but ultimately, the Statesmen took an 83-65 victory.
NOTABLES
- Chappelle Whitney led AUM with a season-high of 24 points while taking his first double-double of the season with 10 boards. He also added six steals and an assist.
- Colby Williams recorded his fifth double figure scoring game with 10 points today.
- Delta State's Bryce Clayton finished with 27 points while hitting seven of his 12 three-point attempts.
- AUM scored 38 points in the paint, 19 off the bench, and 20 off turnovers.
